Hi folks,

I am currentrly trying to get my old TV Card to run with xawtv and after some hours of working it seems I got stuck.

Code:
$ scantv -C /dev/vbi0
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such file or directory
no grabber device available

/dev/vbi0 does not exists, though it did that 1-2 hours ago. Since I don't own a webcam, /dev/video0 will never be needed/exists.

This is my setup:
TV Card: Hauppauge computer works Inc. WinTV Series

My Kernel config: http://paste.frubar.net/14812

lsmod: http://paste.frubar.net/14813

best regards

vbi* is closed captions. If video device does not exist then you can't use the card. You did not reveal what card it is, but methinks most Hauppauge IVTV cards need firmware loaded to work. See your dmesg.

dmesg:
01:07.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture (rev 11)
01:07.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (rev 11)

It is a quiet old card.

Unfortunately I dont know what I did that /dev/vbi0 disappeared.

You need to enable bttv driver for this card.

It is in
-> Device Drivers
│ -> Multimedia support (MEDIA_SUPPORT [=y])
│ -> Video capture adapters (VIDEO_CAPTURE_DRIVERS [=y])
│ -> V4L PCI(e) devices (V4L_PCI_DRIVERS [=y])

Okay, I built in the PCI-Drivers:
Code:
# grep V4L_PCI_DRIVERS .config
CONFIG_V4L_PCI_DRIVERS=y

But I am still missing /dev/vbi0 and xawtv tries to open /dev/video0.

Sorry, my fault, I assumed you will find it under V4L PCI(e) devices, it is right there, called BT848 Video For Linux.

Dependencies should be okay too.

Also I can't find it in the config:

Code:

# grep 848 .config

You may have borked .config, you can run make mrproper to start from scratch. You may want to back up your .config first if you want to use it as a reference.

So I finally found time to clean up my kernel (and include the bt848-driver) und actually got scandir working.

Unfortunately I am not able to watch any channel (though I can choose between some in xawtv).
This is the Output:

Code:

Do you see any errors in dmesg, you may need firmware, http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/
You didn't forget to enable Video For Linux in kernel?
