I tried to run gentoo from the live dvd this morning and i got the boot menu and selected the default x86_64 bootup, and it started booting then asked me about keyboard layout, i just pressed enter then walked away from my computer and when i got back i just had a raw black screen, i tried moving my mouse and pressing random keyboard buttons. but not caring that much to troubleshoot it this early in the morning (may have something to do with me installing 4gb ram and 2gb ram in the same memory bank since my motherboard only has 1 bank, so if u don't know whats up wit this ten don't mind it, i'll figure out eventually myself)

but i don't want to nor intend to use the live dvd that much, so can i install gentoo from it instead of downloading an installation dvd?

There is no such thing as an installation CD/DVD, any live linux system will do. Gentoo does not have a clickable installer like Fedora/SuSE etc, it's all done by hand following the official handbook.

If you downloaded the latest dvd in hopes for an installer since it was announced like that on 01.04.2012, complain to the devs as another victim of a stupid april fool's prank.

Welcome to the forums, btw :)

To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo, has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.
