Hello,

I am seeing a crash (since the update to 5.32.01-r2, with ~x86) when using root.
The crash seem to be related to the interplay of root and libAfterImage (media-libs/libafterimage-1.20).
I cannot reproduce the crash if I compile the same version of root on the same system but without portage (i.e. with configure && make && make install).

Here is one example of the crash:

Code:

$ root -l
root [0] TBrowser b
Warning in <TASImage::GetMask>: No image
Warning in <TASImage::GetMask>: No image
...

 *** Break *** segmentation violation
...

The lines below might hint at the cause of the crash.
If they do not help you then please submit a bug report at
http://root.cern.ch/bugs. Please post the ENTIRE stack trace
from above as an attachment in addition to anything else
that might help us fixing this issue.

My configuration/setup is below (see [1], [2]).
I've tried the usual sanity checks (running revdep-rebuild etc.), without any luck.
Could you please advise me on how to debug/fix this?

Many thanks,

davide

Does the crash still occur if you replace the libafterimage with x11-wm/afterstep (both satisfy the same requirement in the ebuild)?

Thanks for your suggestion, Hypnos.
I have modified the ebuild in the following way:
Code:

# diff  /usr/local/portage/sci-physics/root//root-5.32.01-r2.ebuild*
47c47
<               >=x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11
---
>               || ( >=media-libs/libafterimage-1.20 >=x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11 )

and removed media-libs/libafterimage (that at this point was conflicting with the required x11-wm/afterstep).
Unfortunately x11-wm/afterstep does not compile:

Code:

make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11/work/AfterStep-2.2.11/src/ascp'
make[1]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11/work/AfterStep-2.2.11/src/tools/ASRun'

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `../../../libASGTK/libASGTK.so', needed by `ASRun'.  Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11/work/AfterStep-2.2.11/src/tools/ASRun'

 * If you need support, post the output of 'emerge --info =x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11',
 * the complete build log and the output of 'emerge -pqv =x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11'.
 * The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11/temp/build.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11/temp/environment'.
 * S: '/var/tmp/portage/x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.11/work/AfterStep-2.2.11'

Any idea about what could be the reason? (the full build log is here: http://pastebin.com/2EpPN3Xg)
Many thanks,

davide

That message comes when the GTK USE flag is disabled.

In version 2.2.9 (stable keyword), the message does not cause a build failure (pastebin)

In version 2.2.11 (testing keyword), it does cause a build failure (pastebin)

This looks like a bug ...

If your immediate goal is to get root working, try afterstep-2.2.9.

Thanks again for your suggestion, Hypnos.
I tried to use x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.9, but now I get an error when building root:
Code:

After a little bit more googling around, I see that this type of issue has happened already in the past:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252918
https://savannah.cern.ch/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=30944
and it seems to be related to the fact that root is shipping its own version of libafterimage.

Should I report a bug ? (although this is ~x86 ...).
Many thanks,

davide

~x86/~amd64 is for working out the bugs! Yes, I would report it.

Just in case anyone else runs into the same problem: this issue has been fixed in root-5.32.02-r1 (see details in the above-linked bug report).
