I'm a distro-hopper, so I've tried installing gentoo several times. Recently I had found it frustrating because I couldn't seem to configure a bootable kernel. It was especially frustrating because I *had* been able to do so in the past. I have finally figured out what the problem was. My problems start when I started using ext4 as the default file system for root, and ext2 as the default file system for /boot. Because I had never had any problems with ext3, I just assumed that ext2 and ext4 would be configured into the kernel by default, and that I didn't need to even check it. But they aren't. Ext3 still is, but ext2 and ext4 have to be manually configured. See what happens when you ass-u-me.

ewl,

Turn off both ext2 and ext3 and you will see a new option under ext4 along the lines of Use ext4 for ext23. This lets ext4 drive ext2 and ext3 too.

Never assome the things you need to get booted. Just occasionaly there are some odbball defaults in the kernel. e.g. PCI off, so nothing works.
