PostPosted: Sat Mar 10, 2012 10:12 am    Post subject: Advice needed on reinstall Gentoo or not[SOLVED] Reply with quote

I´ve prepared myself for reinstalling Gentoo, backed up all home and
some etc files and grub.conf...
Something tells me it´s time to do this as glibc keeps failing with sandbox
error and I cannot for the life of me figure out where I´ve f***** up.
Disabling sandbox for glibc is a workaround, not a solution and glibc is the
heart of the system.
I cannot downgrade glibc as I don´t have a gcc version with wihich a previous glibc
was built properly.
Couple o weeks ago i posted this issue but hardly anyone read it let alone
offered an idea. I figure there is no idea as it´s a dead end issue.
Gerard suggested that system is deeply troubled. I smirked at that but
he might have been right.
So here it is again, two questions added:
1. ANY idea where the problem lies?
2. time to reinstall?

Code:

Just a snippet of the build log - hope it´s enough
Btw the previous glib version failed too and compile always fails at the same spot.

Well, just a wild guess, but since it mentions /proc maybe something is wrong there. Is it mounted properly? Maybe it's a kernel configuration problem. You could try some pre-made kernel configs (search the forum).

Other than that, check if you have set strange things in make.conf and files in /etc/portage like package.env or bashrc.

Where is that thread you posted this first?

Thanks for answering, few! :)

Deleted it as it drew attention from 64 people within three weeks, so
no point in leaving it in forum IMHO.
Here´s the proc line in fstab:
Code:
proc                    /proc           proc            defaults        0 0

make.conf
Code:

# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/portage/cnf/make.conf,v 1.68 2003/09/29 18:13:42 carpaski Exp $

# Build-time functionality
# ========================
#
# The USE variable is used to enable optional build-time functionality. For
# example, quite a few packages have optional X, gtk or GNOME functionality
# that can only be enabled or disabled at compile-time. Gentoo Linux has a
# very extensive set of USE variables described in our USE variable HOWTO at
# http://www.gentoo.org/doc/use-howto.html
#
# The available list of use flags with descriptions is in your portage tree.
# Use 'less' to view them:  --> less /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc <--
#
# 'ufed' is an ncurses/dialog interface available in portage to make handling
# useflags for you. 'emerge app-admin/ufed'
#
# Example:

# Host Setting
# ============
#
# If you are using a Pentium Pro or greater processor, leave this line as-is;
# otherwise, change to i586, i486 or i386 as appropriate. All modern systems

# Host and optimization settings
# ==============================
#
# For optimal performance, enable a CFLAGS setting appropriate for your CPU.
#
# Please note that if you experience strange issues with a package, it may be
# due to gcc's optimizations interacting in a strange way. Please test the
# package (and in some cases the libraries it uses) at default optimizations
# before reporting errors to developers.
#
# -mcpu=<cpu-type> means optimize code for the particular type of CPU without
# breaking compatibility with other CPUs.
#
# -march=<cpu-type> means to take full advantage of the ABI and instructions
# for the particular CPU; this will break compatibility with older CPUs (for
# example, -march=athlon-xp code will not run on a regular Athlon, and
# -march=i686 code will not run on a Pentium Classic.
#
# CPU types supported in gcc-3.2 and higher: athlon-xp, athlon-mp,
# athlon-tbird, athlon, k6, k6-2, k6-3, i386, i486, i586 (Pentium), i686
# (PentiumPro), pentium, pentium-mmx, pentiumpro, pentium2 (Celeron), pentium3.
# Note that Gentoo Linux 1.4 and higher include at least gcc-3.2.
#
# CPU types supported in gcc-2.95*: k6, i386, i486, i586 (Pentium), i686
# (Pentium Pro), pentium, pentiumpro Gentoo Linux 1.2 and below use gcc-2.95*

# CRITICAL WARNINGS: ****************************************************** #
# ATHLON-4 will generate invalid SSE  instructions; use 'athlon'   instead. #
# PENTIUM4 will generate invalid SSE2 instructions; use 'pentium3' instead. #
# K6 markings are deceptive. Avoid setting -march for them. See Bug #24379. #

# Decent examples:
#
#CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -msse4.1"
CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe"
# -ffast-math -mmmx -m3dnow -msse -mfpmath=sse"

# If you set a CFLAGS above, then this line will set your default C++ flags to
# the same settings.
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# Advanced Masking
# ================
#
# Gentoo is using a new masking system to allow for easier stability testing
# on packages. KEYWORDS are used in ebuilds to mask and unmask packages based
# on the platform they are set for. A special form has been added that
# indicates packages and revisions that are expected to work, but have not yet
# been approved for the stable set. '~arch' is a superset of 'arch' which
# includes the unstable, in testing, packages. Users of the 'x86' architecture
# would add '~x86' to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to enable unstable/testing packages.
# '~ppc', '~sparc' are the unstable KEYWORDS for their respective platforms.
# DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT YOUR SPECIFIC ~ARCHITECTURE IN THE LIST.
# IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR ARCH, OR THE IMPLICATIONS, DO NOT MODIFY THIS.
#
#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64"

# Portage Directories
# ===================
#
# Each of these settings controls an aspect of portage's storage and file
# system usage. If you change any of these, be sure it is available when
# you try to use portage. *** DO NOT INCLUDE A TRAILING "/" ***
#
# PORTAGE_TMPDIR is the location portage will use for compilations and
#     temporary storage of data. This can get VERY large depending upon
#     the application being installed.
PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp
#
# PORTDIR is the location of the portage tree. This is the repository
#     for all profile information as well as all ebuilds. This directory
#     itself can reach 200M. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND that you change this.
PORTDIR=/usr/portage
#
# DISTDIR is where all of the source code tarballs will be placed for

#     considerably more than any user will ever download. 2-3G is
#     a large DISTDIR.
#DISTDIR=${PORTDIR}/distfiles
#
# PKGDIR is the location of binary packages that you can have created
#     with '--buildpkg' or '-b' while emerging a package. This can get
#     upto several hundred megs, or even a few gigs.
#PKGDIR=${PORTDIR}/packages
#
# PORT_LOGDIR is the location where portage will store all the logs it
#     creates from each individual merge. They are stored as YYMMDD-$PF.log
#     in the directory specified. This is disabled until you enable it by
#     providing a directory. Permissions will be modified as needed IF the
#     directory exists, otherwise logging will be disabled.
PORT_LOGDIR=/var/log/portage
#
# PORTDIR_OVERLAY is a directory where local ebuilds may be stored without
#     concern that they will be deleted by rsync updates. Default is not
#     defined.
#PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage

# PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/portage/local/layman/xeffects \

# Synchronizing Portage
# =====================
#
# Each of these settings effects how Gentoo synchronizes your Portage tree.
# Synchronization is handled by rsync and these settings allow some control
# over how it is done.
#
#
# SYNC is the server used by rsync to retrieve a localized rsync mirror
#     rotation. This allows you to select servers that are geographically
#     close to you, yet still distribute the load over a number of servers.
#     Please do not single out specific rsync mirrors. Doing so places undue
#     stress on particular mirrors.  Instead you may use one of the following
#     continent specific rotations:
#
#   Default:       "rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   North America: "rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   South America: "rsync://rsync.samerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Europe:        "rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Asia:          "rsync://rsync.asia.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Australia:     "rsync://rsync.au.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#
# RSYNC_RETRIES sets the number of times portage will attempt to retrieve
#     a current portage tree before it exits with an error. This allows
#     for a more successful retrieval without user intervention most times.
# RSYNC_RETRIES="1"
#
# RSYNC_TIMEOUT sets the length of time rsync will wait before it times out
#     on a connection. Most users will benefit from this setting as it will
#     reduce the amount of 'dead air' they experience when they run across
#     the occasional, unreachable mirror. Dialup users might want to set this
#     value up around the 300 second mark.
# RSYNC_TIMEOUT=60

# Advanced Features
# =================
#
# MAKEOPTS provides extra options that may be passed to 'make' when a
#     program is compiled. Presently the only use is for specifying
#     the number of parallel makes (-j) to perform. The suggested number
#     for parallel makes is CPUs+1.
MAKEOPTS="-j3"
#
# PORTAGE_NICENESS provides a default increment to emerge's niceness level.
#     Note: This is an increment. Running emerge in a niced environment will
#     reduce it further. Default is unset.
#PORTAGE_NICENESS=3
#
# AUTOCLEAN enables portage to automatically clean out older or overlapping
#     packages from the system after every successful merge. This is the
#     same as running 'emerge -c' after every merge. Set with: "yes" or "no".
#     This does not affect the unpacked source. See 'noclean' below.
#AUTOCLEAN="yes"
#
# FEATURES are settings that affect the functionality of portage. Most of
#     these settings are for developer use, but some are available to non-
#     developers as well.
#
#  'autoaddcvs'  causes portage to automatically try to add files to cvs
#                that will have to be added later. Done at generation times
#                and only has an effect when 'cvs' is also set.
#  'buildpkg'    causes binary packages to be created of all packages that
#                are merged.
#  'ccache'      enables ccache support via CC.
#  'cvs'         feature for developers that causes portage to enable all
#                cvs features (commits, adds) and all USE flags in SRC_URI
#                will be applied for digests.
#  'digest'      autogenerate a digest for packages.
#  'distcc'      enables distcc support via CC.
#  'fixpackages' allows portage to fix binary packages that are stored in
#                PKGDIR. This can consume a lot of time. 'fixpackages' is
#                also a script that can be run at any given time to force
#                the same actions.
#  'keeptemp'    prevents the clean phase from deleting the temp files ($T)
#                from a merge.
#  'keepwork'    prevents the clean phase from deleting the WORKDIR.
#  'noauto'      causes ebuild to perform only the action requested and
#                not any other required actions like clean or
#  'noclean'     prevents portage from removing the source and temporary files
#                after a merge -- for debugging purposes only.
#  'nostrip'     prevents stripping of binaries.
#  'notitles'    disables xterm titlebar updates (which contain status info).
#  'sandbox'     enable sandbox-ing when running emerge and ebuild
#  'strict'      causes portage to react strongly to conditions that
#                have the potential to be dangerous -- like missing or
#                incorrect Manifest files.
#  'userpriv'    allows portage to drop root privleges while it is compiling
#                as a security measure, and as a side effect this can remove
#                sandbox access violations for users.
#  'usersandbox' enables sandboxing while portage is running under userpriv.
#                unpack -- for debugging purposes only.

#
# CCACHE_SIZE sets the space use limitations for ccache. The default size is
#     2G, and will be set if not defined otherwise and ccache is in features.
#     Portage will set the default ccache dir if it is not present in the
#     user's environment, for userpriv it sets: ${PORTAGE_TMPDIR}/ccache
#     (/var/tmp/ccache), and for regular use the default is /root/.ccache.
#     Sizes are specified with 'G' 'M' or 'K'.
#     '4G' for 4 gigabytes, '4096M' for 4 gigabytes, etc... Default is 2G

#
# RSYNC_EXCLUDEFROM is a file that portage will pass to rsync when it updates
#     the portage tree. Specific chucks of the tree may be excluded from
#     consideration. This may cause dependency failures if you are not careful.
#     The file format is one pattern per line, blanks and ';' or '#' lines are
#     comments. See 'man rsync' for more details on the exclude-from format.

Other than that there are too many use flags ...? Don´t believe that there
are strange settings in there. I "multilib" a required use flag?
As for the kernel, problem started with the 3* kernels.
I could run it on one of the older kernels still loadable here and see if that
makes a difference - but I doubt it.

Does the error refer to this kernel option:
Code:
net/sunrpc/rpc_pipe.o

I second few: the reference to /proc/self suggests the possibility of a kernel configuration problem. Perhaps you should try with a genkernel or a fresh kernel configuration, starting from scratch and only deviating from the default where absolutely necessary. Also, you should reproduce the error without the "-j3" in MAKEOPTS and post it again; it is hard to see what actually happened in the log you posted as the output of several different processes is interleaved.

You've got an interesting make.conf there. I don't see something obviously wrong in there. Please post "emerge --info" and "find /etc/portage".

You should whenever you try something to fix your problem rebuild sandbox before testing the glibc build.

Did 3.2.6 from scratch, leaving everything on default where
possible. Have done the same kernel from scratch on another
machine with a QuadCore - no probs there. Glibc is the only
part of system or any other package in world that fails. So
either it actually is a option within the kernel that conflicts
or it is software.
May be I should try a kernel seed ?
emerge busybox && emerge sandbox && emerge glibc turned up
the same outcome. I tried that a couple of times last week.

As you can see I tried out the latest kernel - no dice of course.
Last year I added a multifunction brother printer mfc9465cdn to our LAN and installed
their proprietory drivers. Since I dun remember when I last did emerge -e system
which never failed before especially not on glibc I cannot know if the issue might be
related to those brother drivers or not, can I...

Output of emerge glibc without the j3 makeopts follows

Thanks :)

Did you already to try to install glibc without sandbox? Maybe doing that once fixes the problem.

Another wild guess: Do you have something installed in /usr/local?

When compiled with sandbox disabled glibc conpiles just fine.
But isn´t that just a workaround? You shouldn´t be forced to
do that each time you´d like to compile glibc.

And yes, there is the above mentioned Brother drivers in
/usr/local/. Already thought about removing them but dun knoe
how yet as they are shipped as rpm and if I try to uninstall em
with rpm -e system says it´s not installed.

I am doing a fresh kernel configuration just now, from scratch.
See where that leads to...

It WAS the Brother drivers. Might not have been properly
installed although this really useful color-laser printer/copier/scanner/fax
did work nicely. Pity actually but glibc compiled fine without them
Brother drivers.
So no need to reinstall my system :D

Will now have to find a way to take back my brilliant network Bro
for my box :evil: preferably without wrecking my system :twisted:

Thank you very much for helping @few and @DirtyHairy ( funny user name 8) )

It seems to me that the dynamic linker tries to access /proc/self for writing and triggers the sandbox violation. The access looks strange to me --- it looks like it tries to _create_ /proc/self instead. I don't think that this has anything to do with you screwing up the system, I rather think that it is a sandbox bug or a bug somewhere in glibc triggered by your particular system configuration. One last stab: have you run etc-update (or dispatch-conf) after remerging sandbox? What do you have in your /etc/sandbox.d?

@DirtyHairy
I suspected as much all along which is why I also suspected the
Brother driver to be the scapegoat respectively some mistake
while installing the driver.
Unfortunately I dun remember exactly how I installed the driver
after I´ve bought the device sometime last year.

I installed those drivers on another box in the network as well at the same time
where it does not conflict or even throw glibc off track.
So it is logical to assume that I´ve f***** up.

I´ve had it in for the Brother driver for quite some time but hesitated as the
printer is a marvel and I love it. Didn´t want a loose its functionality; could have
solved the conflict much earlier.

Instead I fiddled around with sandbox, upgraded it cause I hoped it could be a
bug caused by it - now I figure I´ve got proof for its innocence :D

I did not run dispatch.conf though, only etc-update and of course a whole
shit-load of revdep-rebuild over and over again.
Code:
/etc/sandbox.d $ ll
total 28
drwxr-xr-x   2 root root  4096 11. Mär 11:25 .
drwxr-xr-x 104 root root 12288 11. Mär 11:47 ..
-rw-r--r--   1 root root   795 11. Mär 11:25 00default
-rw-r--r--   1 root root    30  4. Mär 16:05 10openssl
-rw-r--r--   1 root root    40  4. Mär 16:56 37fontconfig

Code:
cat 00default
# Default configuration for non-set values
#
# As stated in sandbox.conf, any value in here do not get used if the variable
# is already present in the environment.  All rules of the ACCESS Section
# applies here.
#
# Also note that SANDBOX_WORKDIR is a special variable that is just set if
# sandbox is run interactive (ie, no commandline options), and points to the
# current directory.

# Normally the whole filesystem should be readable
SANDBOX_READ="/"

# Finally add current directory if interactive
SANDBOX_WRITE="${SANDBOX_WORKDIR}"
# Needed for configure tests
SANDBOX_WRITE="/usr/tmp/conftest:/usr/lib/conftest:/usr/lib32/conftest:/usr/lib64/conftest:/usr/tmp/cf:/usr/lib/cf:/usr/lib32/cf:/usr/lib64/cf"

# Usually writes in /home should not cause violations
SANDBOX_PREDICT="${HOME}"

Never edited anything in there.

Guess all this happens cause I played Borderlands too much; causes ur
brain-cells to melt-down :lol:

I must admit that I'm dumbfounded. It might helpful to get a trace of what happens when the sandbox violation is triggered. I guess the easiest way to do this would be to change to the working directory after the violation occured, manually start up a sandbox with SANDBOX_VERBOSE=yes and run "make"; I think this should give you a stack trace. You could also try to get a strace of the failing command. When you attempt any of this, add "-g -O0" to your CFLAGS to enable debugging symbols and switch off optimization in the build.

In any case, I can't imagine any way the printer driver could have anything to do with this issue.

Then how come the error is gone now that the printer driver is gone? Funny coincidence if it was one - I doubt it.
This Brother MFC9465CDN is a network device. It´s got a IP in the local network here
so that every box in the network can access and use it.
This error looked like it was somehow connected to a network protocol unless
I´m wrong which means that the last message about sunrpc has nothing to do
with the source of the error.
I thank you for the tip how to do more tracing, DirtyHairy. Unfortunately
the Brother driver is off my system and glibc compiles fine again, which is a relief
to me.
I know about a 4-page thread on these forums dedicated to the installation of
Brother printers. Guess I´d pay them a visit and try to find out what went wrong
with the driver installation here. Although it is an old thread the way those drivers are
supposed to be installed has not changed a bit in all the years.
I don´t like to put the blame on the drivers themselves but something in there
is indigestible for Gentoo or the installation affords more sensitivity than I can spare 8O

As soon as I´ve worked up the courage to reinstall my Brother marvelous printer all-in-one
and the error reappears I will try the method you suggested for tracing the "bug".

Doing emerge -e system momentarily hoping that glibc compile was no imagination or
wishful thinking.

:)
