When I was using kde4 it was easy to change theme of qtcurve engine through "System settings" (or something like that).
But now I have only WM and don't want to install those bloated kde4 tools, because everything I want is to change theme of qtcurve engine.
Let's consider I want install Soft Metal from

Teegrins, endoveg!
I'd imagine it depends on your WM, and where it reads the configuration from.
I'd probably look into trying the environment variable: QTCURVE_CONFIG_FILE, if I had nothing else to go by. I haven't tried it myself, so take it for what it's worth!
I was just reading about it here:
It's also explained there where the themes are looked up from.
I hope it is x11-themes/qtcurve that you are talking about, and that this can be of at least some help! _________________ Kind regards,
