PPC install screw-up

I went through the whole install process but forgot to run passwd before rebooting. It prompts me for a login when I boot up but doesn't display what I type. I tried root but nothing happens when I hit enter. I can boot my install disk and chroot over to my install but can't seem to fix it

Err... it's not supposed to echo the password. Once you're done typing in your password, it should look like this:
