I have installed Gentoo using System Rescue cd and now I would like to emerge LXDE. I keep getting this output:

Total: 72 packages (72 new), Size of downloads: 126,753 kB

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
#required by x11-libs/pango-1.28.4, required by x11-libs/vte-0.28.2-r202, required by lxde-base/lxterminal-0.1.11, required by lxde-base/lxde-meta-0.5.5, required by lxde-meta (argument)
=x11-libs/cairo-1.10.2-r1 X
#required by x11-wm/openbox-3.5.0-r1, required by x11-misc/obconf-2.0.3_p20110314-r1, required by lxde-base/lxde-meta-0.5.5, required by lxde-meta (argument)
=x11-libs/pango-1.28.4 X

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring CONFIG_PROTECT).

I have changed my make.conf file to look like this:

GNU nano 2.2.5 File: /etc/make.conf

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
# detailed example.
CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
USE="mmx sse sse2"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.the-best-hosting.net"

SYNC="rsync://rsync6.ca.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics"

VIDEO_CARDS="intel"

USE="dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.8-r4 python"

USE="udev consolekit dbus policykit"

USE="-lxde -gnome -kde dbus -qt4 -qt3support"

USE="-dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.8-r4 python"

USE="--autounmask-write to write changes to config files"

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.arcticnetwork.ca/"

SYNC="rsync://rsync5.ca.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

#required by x11-libs/pango-1.28.4, required by x11-libs/vte-0.28.2-r202, requ$

USE="-x11-libs/pango-1.28.4 X"

USE="-x11-misc/obconf-2.0.3_p20110314-r1 lxde"

I must be missing something because I keep getting the same output.

Also I don't know what to do with the auto unmask suggestion: "Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring CONFIG_PROTECT)."

Thanks in advance for any help, even just a pointer to a webpage that explains USE flags for dummy's :)

To do what emerge is telling you, write the line
Code:
EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--autounmask-write y"

in /etc/make.conf. Accept when emerge want to change packages configuration. Before proceeding, you must update your configurations files with etc-update or dispatch-conf as emerge will tell you.

You should have, I thing, only one USE variable in your make.conf. Like you do, it is possible that only the value of the last one will be take in account by emerge. I am not sure if severals instances of the USE variable in /etc/make.conf are cumulative for emerge.

You mixte things that are package specific and must go in one of the file in /etc/portage/ with globals variables that go in the USE variable in /etc/make.conf.

Sweet! :D That worked. I have been reading about USE but it still seems complicated. Thanks Logicien, these forums are great.
