Hi,

I had just firefox and a terminal open when X became unresponsive. I could not get back to firefox, but still could switch desktops (but not start new programs there). I could also not scroll or close the terminal window. But I could still type things into the terminal. After typing sudo reboot everything froze but did not reboot.

Here is the log of the last two sessions (an excerpt from /var/log/slim.log). During the first of those the system became unresponsive. But in the second one there is also an error, which appeared in the first as well. Does anyone have an idea where to start to fix this?

It looks like dbus kicked the bucket, I would try re-emerging it and ensuring that it's running (Actually, I'm about 95% it's just not running. Try "rc-update add dbus default").

Can you post the output of "rc-status -a"? And are you able to get to TTY from X when it happens?

Dynamic Runlevel: manual

It does indeed look like dbus isn't running. I'll add it and see what happens if problems remain, I'll re-emerge it.

I had the crash happening just once so far. I could change to the terminal I had open but not create a new one.

Not having dbus running can yield really odd results. Adding it should help. You could also do:

Code:
/etc/init.d/dbus start

If it yields an error, let us know.
