It seems that it cannot find the nouveau module. this is what i ve done after recompile the kernel

1) cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.6.36-gentoo-r5
2) reinstall xorg-server and xorg-x11 (emerge xorg-server xorg-x11)
3) install nvidia-drivers (emerge nvidia-drivers)
4) install nvidia-settings (emerge nvidia-settings )

Anyway...i thought to change the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and wrote it like this :

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Nvidia FX 5200"
        Driver      "nvidia"
EndSection

ran startx

and returned this :

Code:
xauth:  file /home/n3t/.serverauth.3996 does not exist

If you want ot use "nouveau" add it to /etc/make.conf:
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau"

Then:
Code:
emerge -1avuDN xorg-server

And you don't need an xorg.conf file.

Can you post your /etc/make.conf because the nouveau driver is not from the nvidia-drivers package.

Hi, you need to recompile this package :

Code:

# emerge -av nvidia-drivers

After that, reboot your box and try if your Xorg will start.

Do you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? If so, post that.

If you want ot use "nouveau" add it to /etc/make.conf:
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau"

Then:
Code:
emerge -1avuDN xorg-server

And you don't need an xorg.conf file.

What if i do this ^ ?

You first have to decide whether you want to use nouveau or nvidia. The problem from the original X startup is that you had nouveau in xorg.conf but libdrm not compiled with VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau". The problem when you changed it to "nvidia" is that the kernel module was not built for your kernel (discrepancy between "eselect kernel show", "uname -r" and "find /lib/modules -name nvidia.ko")

So..lets say that i want to use nouveau.

I ll change the VIDEOCARDS into this VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau" and recompile libdrm (emerge libdrm) ?
Or not ?

Yes. Also make sure that eselect opengl is set to xorg-x11 and that nouveau is enabled in your kernel. The proprietary nvidia kernel module must not be loaded.

hrmm...second error is familiar

just so you have an idea what people are looking at/seeing in your logs, and can figure this out if you hit this in the future:

Code:

dlopen: libdrm_nouveau.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

== libdrm without nouveau support

Code:

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.36-gentoo-r5/video/nvidia.ko): No such device

== what chithanh said + the explanation at the link above.

Hello,

same problem here.

I do startx, but I get always the following:

Code:
xauth:  file /root/.serverauth.1485 does not exist

I've read many posts and documents on Internet but every solution I've found doesn't work.
