This is really bad, I think:
http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/479960-the-six-best-linux-community-server-distributions

I don't want to start "distro-wars" but didn't even look at? I mean you can get gentoo as server profile, hardened, vps etc.
Then why Fedora and not CentOS?

This article really confuses me :D

She completely overlooked Gentoo. She also left out Centos. How can you write an article about community-supported linux distros and not even mention Centos?

She should have entitled the article, "My favorite server distros, of the ones I personally happen to have tried."

yea, she has no right to make a review of this magnitude when she obviously has not tried all the available distros out there that provide server profiles. Gentoo is used on some major servers including some on wall street and google. @disi ignorance is a bliss, this user should just be ignored, you know yourself how great Gentoo is as a server platform so don't let this low rated article bother you.

I get the impression this article is about average Joes home sever. What she mentions are platitudes. Someone who cares about a neat installer on the distribution cd obviously isn't managing a sever farm and is likely a child of the Windows age.

Also I wonder how new technologies like Gnome-3 or pulseaudio have any relevance here. Systemd, an init system with a high pace of changes and not being able to stop services is off course a great choice for a server ...

children of the windows age...

reminds me of a commercial I saw on tv recently, about how you should spend 100's of USD to buy your kids office so they can play with it...

how do you play with microsoft office...

I remember an easter egg in MS products, like typing "blue" then change the font colour to blue, go about -> help and click on the Windows logo. I think it was some flipper game...

There is a long tradition of easter eggs in MS Excel which will start a 3D video game. They have included a flight simulator, a Doom simulation, Wolfenstein 3D, etc.

That tells you how ridiculously huge the codebase is, when they don't think it's an issue to stick a 3D video game in there for the hell of it.

sounds more like an excuse to plug videogames in work machines cause they would rather play doom than code a quality OS...

I remember playing Doom on the network at work, back around 1996 (or maybe that was Quake). Hard to quietly look like you're working when you're trying to dodge rockets and grenades or do a running, jump-off-the-ledge-flying-attack-from-behind!

One guy in particular used to move his body like he was the character. Every once in a while you'd hear some kind of unexplained exclamation or cry of surprise come from somewhere in the cube-farm.

Must have been Quake then. I specifically remember using a grenade launcher, and dodging rockets. Whatever it was, it was new that year and "state of the art". We thought it was tits.

It's a typical linux.com splog article. I wouldn't even print it out to wipe my ass with, at least Phoronix by comparison produces original content once in a while.

How Linux mastered Wall Street

Quote:
Linux also offered financial firms the ability to modify the source code to further speed performance, Lameter said. "It depends on how daring the exchange is," Lameter said, noting that NASDAQ uses a modified version of the Gentoo Linux distribution.

gentoo is the only linux where you are nearly in full control about what's init and what's not.

due arch-secific-compiling-possibilities you will speed-up everything. this takes some time to configure but it finally results in hardware-usage as it should be and not just i386. when i'm having a pentium4 it will be build for it (mmx, sse, sse2 or whatever). It's also good for security-configuration.

also the console responds much faster than in i386-distros or alike.

gentoo is just linux as it should be.

I think you can similar things in Arch and FreeBSD, although it's not the mainstream way.

Also, Linux From Scratch gives you a fair bit of control about what's in it as well. :P

I love Debian but it’s hard to recommend it as a server OS for an organization when Centos/RHEL is so widely used and supported commercially. For me as a Systems Administrator being able to provision a new Centos VM in seconds using kickstart is hard to beat. For me personally at home I use Gentoo for server work I would not use it at work only because there are very few competent Systems administrators that can maintain such a distro if I happen to move on. A company has a higher chance of finding someone familiar with RHEL if and when I move on.

Good call (in my layperson's opinion, not being a professional sysadmin myself).

We have a state lottery (besides others) here.
I once was in a tobacco shop where they also sell tickets.
They use preprinted tickets that are put in a special printer hooked up to a central computer.
You can ask what the last digit of the number should be.
Anyway the saleslady put a ticket in and the thing froze.
Muttering she said sorry I have to restart.
She did this by pulling the plug and reinsert it.
To my surprise the monitor that faces the client was showing a Gentoo startup!
Gerard.
