Hello to everyone.
Code:

Linux gent 3.1.6-gentoo #1 Fri Dec 30 16:32:44 MSK 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I upgraded to KDE 4.7.4 and now DE is very unstable and quite unusable. First of all, application list is empty in Kicker menu: Faves, Computer and other tabs are populated but application tab is clean.

Also, Panel is not working well, adding standard panel fails, since menu opens on top, when panel itself is on the bottom, so cannot also change settings because all configs move to top of the desktop to invisible area.
Also, there are some issue with akonadi, making kmail etc. unusable, but firstly I need to populate menus at least and make panel behave correctly.
Anyone knows how to fix this?

Thanks.

As a normal user, run
Code:
kbuildsycoca4

If it still does not show any applications, run
Code:
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

to recreate the cache from scratch.
Did you logout after upgrading kde? Tried to restart kdm?
Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

Did you remove all panels from your desktop?
If the menu opens on top, just try to ignore and start moving it (there is a button on the panel for moving the panel to a corner, should be in the center, right near the button for changing height).

I did that couple times, even replaced .kde4, .config, .local and re-login again but that did not help at all. No, way apps are gone. I am rebuilding few libs at the moment.

OK. kde-4.7.4 got stable right now. Probably you managed to get an incosistent state of the portage-tree, or some other update broke linking or whatsoever.
Best thing would be to
Code:
# emerge --sync
# revdep-rebuild
# emerge -uDNavt world

I do not think that kde 4.7.4 id free of major bugs as of now. I run revdep-rebuild but it did not find anything.

When I run "kbuildsycoca4" with or without "--noincremental" it looks for applications-menu, though file names are different:

Code:
kbuildsycoca4 running...
kbuildsycoca4(17571): "applications.menu"  not found in  ("/home/mikayel/.config/menus/", "/etc/xdg/menus/")

But here are menu files, although having different names.

Code:

$ ll /etc/xdg/menus/
итого 28
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Янв 17 15:45 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root  4096 Июл 25 11:36 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10795 Май 21  2011 kde-4-applications.menu
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   279 Май 21  2011 kde-information.menu
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  3984 Окт  8 11:14 lxde-applications.menu

How do I make kde see menu configs?

I did strace and it showed that kbuildsycoca4 is looking for filenames, applications.menu and kde-applications.menu in /etc/xdg and ~/.confiig/menus. So, I manually copied:
Code:
cp /etc/xdg/menus/kde-4-applications.menu config/menus/kde-applications.menu

then kbuildsycoca4 did work and that solved the problem, but there are few more. I'll make new post for it.
