I have built in SYM53C8xx and also emerge sys-block/qla-fc-firmware, and entered it under Device drivers.
Any idea what I might have missed in order to get the kernel to boot OK?
All ideas most welcome.
Best regards,
/Christer |

agkbill,
Fisrt, you appear to have two different SCSI interfaces.
Code: | 00:01.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 14)
00:01.0 SCSI storage controller: Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. Cassini 10/100/1000 (rev 14) |
but I don't believe it as they are at the same PCI device address and Cassini 10/100/1000 is an Ethernet port.
Its odd that thay have the same PCU bus, BUs:Device:Function number
Code: | [ 97.466259] hda: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-C2612, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
[ 98.295746] hda: UDMA/33 mode selected | is a bad sign. Your CDROM shold be sr0.
The Old IDE kernel branch is depreciated and no longer supported by udev. Turn it off. Code: | < > ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED) ---> |
Choose your PATA chip set driver from the SATA and PATA menu. Code: | *> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers ---> | and its submenus.
You also need SCSI CDROM support. Code: | <*> SCSI CDROM support |
SYM53C8xx looks right for you. If you need qla-fc-firmware for your SCSI interface, it must be built into the kernel.
The emerge will install it to /lib/firmware, which is on the root filesystem, where it cannot be read until after root is mounted.
Code: | Look under Generic Driver Options
() External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary | you can enter a space separated list of firmware files to be included.
I have Code: | │ │ [ ] Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary │ │
│ │ (rtl_nic/rtl8168e-2.fw radeon/PALM_pfp.bin radeon/PALM_me.bin │ │
│ │ (/lib/firmware/) Firmware blobs root directory | for my diskless media player.
Code: | [ 133.596852] VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
[ 133.687771] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
[ 133.809849] 0300 83184 hda driver: ide-cdrom
[ 133.884713] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) | confirms its a hard drive device driver issue as no hard drives are listed under Code: | here are the available partitions |
Ypur lsmod from the liveCD is interesting. The only SCSI low level drivers there are Code: | qla2xxx 305413 0
aic7xxx 112212 0 | so clearly one of those is used.
What does from the liveCD say? _________________ Regards,

Dear NeddySeagoon,
Thank you for reply,
Before I saw your post I found the thread "Simple answers to simple problems - read before posting", sorry I did not found it earlier.
Well there I could read about (/proc/config.gz), during my work to get my V440 running I had wondered were that info was.
After booting form CD and chroot into new environment I took a look.
It was a very long list of settings. I extracted the Device Drivers part, It looks like, after I removed all entry's not used.

After changing all this and compiling new kernel it did boot, wow!
I do not know if all changes make sense for my server, does anyone have comments on the settings?
I will add output from lsmod, lspci -k as soon as I can start up my server again. I will also go thure your comments NeddySeagoon, thank you.
All the best.
/Christer

My network do not start as it should, that will be next challenge.
Input on how I can improve are most wellcome.
I will use my server for astronomical simulations with GADGET2 so speed and memory use is important.
Thank you!
Best regards,
/Christer |
