I want to make copies of some of my DVD, as I use them a lot and I'd like to put the originals away and take them out whenever I scratch up or lose a copy when I travel (don't worry, this is all for personal use and doesn't violate any copyright stuff).

One disc of one show - The 4400 - copied just fine. This was on a single layer DVD. But most of my stuff is on dual-layer discs. So I got a stack of Verbatim Azo 8x DL discs and made a copy of one of my Babylon 5 DVD's.

I simply copied the DVD to my filesystem, opened k3b, started a new video DVD project, and copied the files to the correct dirs on the disk. The disk plays, but the quality is complete sh**. The menu is somewhat pixelated, and the show itself looks like the video went through a grinder.

Did I get the wrong kind of recordable DVD for this purpose?

And by the way, I can't simply rip the DVD. I need to keep the original fs intact in order to preserve closed-captions.

I've confirmed there's nothing wrong with my original disks, and mplayer plays the DVD copies on my hard drive just fine. So the problem is either the discs I'm copying to or the copy process in k3b. I'm inclined to think its the disks, since it worked with a single layer disc.

I guess I'm back to my original plan: get a 2 TB hard drive to copy my frequently used DVD's onto.

if those are high-quality verbatims I realize they aren't cheap but I'd suspect it first and burn another one. verbatim datalifeplus (specifically) seems to always rate at the top for quality although I don't know if they have dl in that line. e.g., they have lower-quality lines like "datalifevalue" or "valuelife" or something similarly-named to dlp I don't recall right now which I believe rate relatively poorly.

afaik not all verbatim azo discs are made by them so if you do 'dvd+rw-mediainfo device' and get "Media ID" you can check if maybe you need to get a better-quality disc: http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm

I also find videohelp.com useful when it comes to researching media.
