I have used cdparanoia, lame, mp3wrap, mp3splt, ,mplayer, and faac to get a cd in ".m4b" format that is allegedly the format to use for the ipod. I have an old windows laptop which I rarely use which allows me to run itunes which mysteriously will read CD's, store results on a hard drive and then sync what is there to the ipod. All reasonably easy and totally inscrutable. I have now installed: gtkpod, exaile, banshee, libgpod, gnupod, and perhaps more(?), in an attempt to get the contents of a CD onto the ipod. So far no luck other than what I managed on the Windows machine.

I know of no way to get the CD read other than using cdparanoia and have no idea how to get from that to actually having the CD on the ipod. Any help appreciated. Thanks,
Fred

The method you use will depend on the type of ipod. You might want to research ifuse.

I can now add ifuse to my list of failures. I can mount the ipod, but ifuse gives

No device found, is it connected?
If it is make sure that your user has permissions to access the raw usb device.
If you're still having issues try unplugging the device and reconnecting it.

Reconnecting does not help.

If it makes you feel any better, that's what mine does too. I think there may be a bug.

Glad I could be of help. :P

For some reason when I first tried banshee, I got nowhere. I can now get it to read music off a CD and play it. But apparently there is now way to get that music into the ipod with the tools gentoo provides. I have also downloaded a program called nightingale (not gentoo). It looks like it might be able to sync with an ipod, but when I try to mount an audio disk using this program, I get "Could not mount Audio Disc -- Location is not mountable". There was another program (forget which) that had a button for "Audio Disk" which gave the same message. So either I need to find something that makes my CD available when "Audio Disk" is clicked on, or (long shot) find what is needed to get banshee to sync with the ipod. Any other ideas? Thanks,
Fred

No, I was aware of that possibility, but read somewhere that it was a bit dicey, and I have not installed wine. This is probably a very reasonable suggestion though. I guess I'll give that try. Does wine come with a browser?

After several tries at installing/removing/installing...wine, and downloading itunes (the try using the browser provided in wine would not do the download), I'm ready to say that I am not able to get this woking on my machine. One error that came up is

A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (-42404).
I'm still hoping there is someone out there that has another idea. Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred,

I'm pretty sure I have used Banshee before to add tracks to my iPod. It might have been while in Arch (my Gentoo is strictly QT/KDE apps) but it should work the same?

I suspect it has to do with my having a recent iPod nano. It's called 6th generation. I'm running banshee-2.2.1 which I believe is the latest available on gentoo. Thanks for the thought.

When I go to the suggest site, I see that the latest unstable release is 1.1.1. But I currently have that version installed. for both ifuse and libimodibiledevice. When I try ifuse /mnt/ipod, I get

and I get that even trying to do this as root. Is my version somehow different than what you are suggesting? Thanks. I'm still guessing that it has to do with me having a later version of the ipod.

The git master is the latest version of the software and has support for ios 5. It is a development version and may contain bugs. The 1.1.1 release is older and does not have the changes for ios 5. See the news section. The second site has a link to the git master.

I do not use ifuse so I cannot say that it will work but the git master is the latest software.

I have downloaded http://cgit.sukimashita.com/libimobiledevice.git/snapshot/libimobiledevice-master.tar.bz2 and slightly ignoring the instructions in the README file (which must not have been correct) have compiled what was there. At this point nowhere in the subdirectories is therea file named ifuse. I think I'm missing some key point. Thanks for getting me this far.

According to http://gtkpod.org/wiki/Libgpod libgtkpod has support of all ipods except the the nano 6G (mine). According to another site (lost it) the first support for the 6G is likely to be from this library. Looks like I'm out of luck until someone figures out how to support this. I am developing a real hatred for apple.

Got my 6th gen nano touch working with https://github.com/daktak/gentoo/tree/master/media-libs/libhashab

gtkpod works. gnupod does not.

So anything that uses libgpod should work (rhythmbox)
