Hi,
Was trying to clear out the contents of my /var/tmp/portage directory, and I typed rm -r */., realised it was wrong and hit rm -r /* before thinking.
Hit ctrl-C in about a second. /bin/ls and /bin/rm don't work for sure, but powered down the machine without any messages but it shutdown as requested.

Have no clue what state the machine is in. I'm going to try and mount the / with a -ro and get the etc directory, /var/lib/portage/world and the home directory using a bootable usb stick. From there I hope to rebuild.

This is incredibly stupid I know, but what would your first steps be?

Thanks,
Jim

BrummieJim,

Boot with a USB stick.
Copy /home, /etc and /var/lib/portage/world then do a clean install.
Use the salvaged settings from /etc as far as possible.
Reinstate the world file in the new install, run
Code:
emerge -e @world --jobs=2 --keep-going --with-bdeps=y
have a few beers, then have a few more beers and get a good nights sleep.

You missed the bit about the beer - thats very important.
