I have an mpeg file recorded from an old VHS tape. The file itself has a spot about 8min in where the video screws up for a moment. From that point on the sound is out of sync. While I plan to demux the video and audio to address that I wanted to ask if anyone has any suggestions about repairing the video stream? Has anyone encountered this before.

Sadly re-recording the stream does not seem to be an option.

Thanks.

You won't get back what is dead, so forget about recovering the missing part.

What i find best, even it might sound weird at first, is playing it with a player and asking the player to record the result to another file.
It's kinda a bit like demux them, but (i use vlc & mplayer) all players have some error handling and try to skip/recover the missing part, this looks the same but the result is always better as editing/demux programs doesn't have these error tolerance and generally gave a poorer result or just stop when seeing an error.

You'll endup with a "valid" mpeg new file with a kinda wysiwyg version of what the player has played. This file is now a valid mpeg easy to demux and rework with any editor (as the file itself have no error now), even your damage part is within.
Next step is just editing it.

Hmm, thanks. I'll give that a shot and let you know.
