I'm trying to update my system and, (the documents of) libusb-0.1.12-r7 is failing to build. The error is:

Code:
jade -t sgml -d ./website.dsl\#html ./manual.sgml
jade:<URL>http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.2/docbookx.dtd:112:17:E: "X20AC" is not a function name
jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.3/ent/iso-amsa.ent:8:19:E: "X21B6" is not a function name
(followed by hundreds more of the same)

I've googled and found that people were having similar problems some years ago with several pacakges and, then it was fixed by re-merging sgml-common. Here, here and here. I tried that but, unfortunately, it didn't work for me.

Anyone got any ideas for how I can fix this properly? For the moment, I'm going to disable the doc useflag for this package.

My emerge info is:

Code:
$ emerge --info =dev-libs/libusb-0.1.12-r7

I believe we have lots of threads here explaining why doc flag should not be enabled globally.

Right, it sounds like I should probably just disable the doc flag globally and enable it only for the packages I actually need it for then. To be honest, I know I should do that anyway but, I was just being lazy. If I do that, I guess I'm not so worried about a solution to this since I'll never be installing libusb with the doc flag. That said though, it is obviously a bug and, although it is quite low priority, it is bound to affect someone who actually does want the documents. Unless someone knows of a duplicate of it, I'll report it in the bug tracker. I don't think it is a duplicate of the one I linked in my first post because it is not resolved by re-merging sgml-common as it was for the people reporting that.

Just to check, disabling the doc flag won't stop man pages being installed right? Because, I do generally want those. If they are installed anyway, I only need it for a couple of packages where I actually want the documentation.

I had the same problem but it seems to be fixed in revision 1.11 of dev-libs/libusb-0.1.12-r7.ebuild, so do an emerge --sync and try again.

I do enable "doc" globally and report bugs where I find them!

A problem persisted with building the extra documentation (doc USE flag) for dev-libs/libusb-0.1.12-r7 for me until I unmerged all of
  • app-text/openjade
  • app-text/docbook*
  • app-text/sgml-common
then erased /etc/sgml and finally re-emerged libusb (which pulled back in most of the above). SpanKY gave me the hint in this bug.
