Hello All

I recently upgraded apache to 2.2.21-r1. Since this upgrade I get the following message on /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Code:
 * Stopping apache2 ... [ ok ]
 * Starting apache2 ...
 * start-stop-daemon: /usr/sbin/apache2 is already running [ ok ]

apache process is definitely not found after the start up failure. If I issue another restart or start, apache starts fine. This happens 100% of the time on one server, and intermittently on 3 other servers.

Here are my USE flags for apache2
Code:
[ebuild   R    ] www-servers/apache-2.2.21-r1  USE="ssl -debug -doc -ldap (-selinux) -static -suexec -threads" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic auth_digest authn_anon authn_dbd authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock dbd deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers ident imagemap include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation proxy proxy_ajp proxy_balancer proxy_connect proxy_http rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias -asis -authn_alias -cern_meta -cgi -cgid -charset_lite -dumpio -log_forensic -proxy_ftp -proxy_scgi -reqtimeout -substitute -version" APACHE2_MPMS="prefork -event -itk -peruser -worker" 5,201 kB

I accepted the new start up script with the upgrade.

Here is my output of emerge --info on the box that has the hardest problem with this:

Any ideas on what is causing this? I've verified that PID file is definitely in /var/run. It appears that the stop() in restart() is not removing the PID before the start() is called. Let me know if you need any additional information.

Thanks!
hanji

I found a bug report relating to the same problem:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388009

The fix was to change the init script for the stop().

Original:
Code:
while ( ! test -f "${PIDFILE}" && pgrep -P ${PID} apache2 >/dev/null ) \

Change:
Code:
while ( ! test -f "${PIDFILE}" || pgrep -P ${PID} apache2 >/dev/null ) \

This fixed the problem on my boxes.

Thanks!
hanji
