Hello,
I've been using an old 19" CRT but I think its time to upgrade to a widescreen. I am using grub 0.97-r10.
Right now my grub kernel line says vga=791 which is 1024x768. Is there a vga= value for 1920x1080?

| That depends 100% on your graphic card. Each may have a different number, if it provides one for 1920x1080 at all (many don't). |

| You need to actually check what's in the vbios of the card. Do a forum search, this has come up tons of times in the past. |

Change the kernel line in grub to read vga=ask.
You can then try the different resolutions offered.
I have a GT200 card and my monitor is 1920x1200.
My kernel line has vga=0x31b,how this translates to decimal I don't know.

| Came across this article which states the available resolutions. 1920x1080 isn't on the list so it seems it's not possible. |

| That list is meaningless for anything but actual vesa resolutions (those listed in black), the article itself says so. You need to check the vbios of your card. No article will tell you what's in there, only actually checking will. |

For me that gives highest resolution of 800x600, and doesn't list any of the higher resolutions available. I'm (now) using grub2 and running vbeinfo(?) from within grub reports them. |

Just out of interest, does that report higher resolutions? Because I can also only set non-native resolutions.
