I was getting this error when trying to use growisofs:

:-[ LBA=10d0h, SENSE KEY=Fh/ASC=FFh/ASCQ=FFh ]
:-( write failed: Input/output error

I fixed it by deactivating the dma with the following command:

hdparm -d 0 /dev/dvd

Hope it's gonna help somebody

updating the firmware also fix de problem (dma can be activated)
