hi friends....

I have a problem when i was trying to install gnome, i read the handbook "The GNOME Configuration HOWTO" and i had some problems about USE but i can resolve, i have just 1 problem in this moment:

Code:
Jack-Krauser-Gentoo64 ~ # emerge gnome
Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "x11-libs/gtk+:2[jpeg]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.4::gentoo (Missing IUSE: jpeg)
(dependency required by "media-video/cheese-2.32.0" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.32.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome" [argument])

please, can anybody help me?

The message is trying to tell you that gtk needs to be built with USE=jpeg in order to satisfy the dependency requirements for cheese. If you plan to use gnome, you can use the gnome profile by using `eselect profile list` and `eselect profile set <number>` which should include flags such as that.

Otherwise, `"echo "x11-libs/gtk+ jpeg" >> /etc/portage/package.use` and it should all be fine.

i want to build my gnome system with my own hands, i don't wanna use gnome profile, i want to learn how linux works, anyway, when i check the package "x11-libs/gtk+:2" with "equery" command and i get this:

Code:
Jack-Krauser-Gentoo64 ~ # equery uses x11-libs/gtk+:2
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.4:
 U I
+ + cups          : Add support for CUPS (Common Unix Printing System)
 - - debug         : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra
output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see
                     http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml
 - - doc           : Adds extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc)
 - - examples      : Install examples, usually source code
 + + introspection : Use dev-libs/gobject-introspection for introspection
 - - test          : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with
FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so
don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore
 - - vim-syntax    : Pulls in related vim syntax scripts
 - - xinerama      : Add support for the xinerama X11 extension, which is
mandatory if you work in multiple monitors setup

i can see the USE "jpeg" in the x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.4 package doesn't existe, so, if i use your idea: "echo "x11-libs/gtk+ jpeg" >> /etc/portage/package.use" it doesn't work...

thanks mark_alec for your response

Ah, it seems that is a USE dependency that is a relic from when gtk+ had it. Instead add "x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf jpeg" to /etc/portage/package.use.

Try [re-]emerging it, `emerge --oneshot gdk-pixbuf`.
