ssh portforward emerge sync?

emerge sync is blocked somehow from school.. but I have set up forwarding to allow me to do other things through ssh.. like connect to irc or certain web sites.. can I somehow tunnel the emerge sync command.. and if so. How do I tell gentoo to use the tunnel..

check the rsync man page and look for ssh ... there is an example how to do it.
