Can someone explain to me what happens when two identical packages are installed via emerge but have different slots? I understand the concept of slots, but cannot find any information on exactly how it works, how to use it, and how to configure it.

e.g. Package A-v1 installs /usr/sbin/"some binary" in slot 1

If I try to install Package A-v2 in slot 2, how does portage handle the slot 2 /usr/sbin/"some binary" ?

Can someone provide me with fine details on how portage uses/handles slots?

It's the responsibility of the package / ebuild to handle that correctly. E.g. xchat installs a binary xchat in SLOT=1 and a binary xchat-2 in SLOT=2.
