I just upgraded to KDE 4.7.0 and decided to try KMail 2. It fails to start with the following error message:
Code:

KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now.
The error was:
Failed to fetch the resource collection.

I went into SystemSettings and found what appeared to be akonadi resources under Personal Information/Akonadi Resource Configuration. The Personal Calendar entry did not have an entry so I created one. Perusing the other entries in the Akonadi Resource Configuration I found other fields that were showing "OK" that were not set up.

KMail still aborts with the same error. I did verify that akonadi is running, btw:

    jc@bopper ~ $ ps -A | grep akonadi
    5914 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_control
    5917 ? 00:00:00 akonadiserver
    5926 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_agent_l
    5927 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_agent_l
    5928 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_agent_l
    5929 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_agent_l
    5930 ? 00:00:02 akonadi_agent_l
    5931 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_agent_l
    5932 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_maildis
    5941 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_nepomuk
    5946 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_nepomuk
    5949 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_nepomuk

    7038 ? 00:00:00 akonadi_pop3_re
    jc@bopper ~ $

I don't see what's wrong.

emerge --info kmail follows:

I expect you've already looked at this, but if not:

I started Akonadi Console as you described, and eventually found the Mail Dir folder setting that was not initialized and set it up. I restarted Akonadi and then KMail started.

Seems like they have some improving to do in porting settings from KMail -1, though.

As far as I can tell, it didn't import my outgoing mail settings and all of my saved folder settings are gone.

I'm going to stick with Thunderbird for a while.

Which Mail Dir folder ? I started up Akonadi console and there are four entries for my four email accounts (2 x POP3, 2 x IMAP), Nepomuk Email reader and Mail Dispatcher agent, but I can't see any 'Mail Dir Folder' entry. Please help !

As I noted before:

Thunderbird is entirely adequate for me.

Good luck!

4.7.49.9999 works a lot better, but I understand live versions are not for everyone. Also, I've still got nepomuk disabled for dumbness.

Yeah!
Nepomuk & akonadi team is insufferable :?

I've decided to dump KDE, after having the revelation that it's never going to be fixed. Think about it. How long has it been half-broken ? At least since 4.0 when it was released whilst no better than beta. Since then the developers have continued to add on new subsystems such as strigi (OK, not too bad, that one), nepomuk (running at around 60 processes on my machine) and akonadi which have made KDE all but unusable.

We all hang in there, hoping that some day it will be fixed. There are a few people jumping ship from GNOME, so we know the grass isn't that much greener over the fence but we also know that KDE hasn't worked properly for at least the last eighteen months. Clearly, fixing it is not a high priority for the developers so it seems to me that if you want something that just works, you have to look elsewhere. For me, that is XFCE but the important point is to break the KDE habit and become productive again.

I think KDE-4.x is pretty good now, with a few glaring exceptions, such as KMail.

Gnome-3 doesn't even run on another of my machines, but what I can see so far is a disaster. Gnome 2 is decent, though, but it is apparently a dead end. But in the end, linux has a lot of choices. If you're comfortable with it, go for it.

Is is pretty good, except for the bits that aren't, and having a working email client in a modern desktop environment is basic stuff nowadays.

Rebuilt the 4.7.49.9999 pim packages today and... it is not worse than before. Actually works quite well  Kontact claims to be of version 4.7.2 now. I also activated nepomuk without hell breaking loose, which is necessary to make kmail work comfortably (e.g. mail contact input search/selection).
