I run 2 window air conditioners on the room where I keep the computers, and one of them runs in January when the temperature outside is well below freezing. I need to pump the heat out of that room in a way that is thermostatically controlled, and works without manual intervention, Opening the window is not an option.

For readers who haven't spotted it, that command destroys your install.
It removes root and everything under it.

I *SAID* it was evil, and I said don't try it.

BTW, Neddy, your backup signature is apropriate here too. It doesn't always have to be a hardware failure.

You should seriously throw out your Prescotts - that might also help concentration ;)

OK, I looked it up. Its a Pentium 4 cpu. Until a few years ago, I was running a few 200 MHz WinChip boxes as firewalls. :o

Moriah,

On hophni, go ahead and post the results of lspci -n, cat /proc/cpuinfo, and the /etc/fstab file for it. There might be some issues. At the very least, the ohci USB driver isn't set. I also saw some devices that might be wanting IOMMU turned on. I'd like to be sure of what devices you have so I can be sure that all is as well as it can be.

Good to read that the NM might be wanting to run properly. I was doing some work with the web machine, and I found it really likes 3.1.10. I don't know why the 3.1.x family has gone to EOL status. As far as I can tell, it really makes machines work better than the 3.2.x series.

Cheers,
Pappy

I discovered that I had omitted the realtek driver for a pair of 100baseT nics, so I rebuilt that kernel. If it pukes again, I get all the incriminating evidence. Unitl that happens, I'm goint to just let it run.

Fingers *ARE* "digits" -- that's the original meaning of the word. "Digital" means like unto counting on ones fingers, in discrete units.

It's Mayday, and I have new seeds. I've just uploaded .configs for 3.0.29-tuxonice in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Pappy

With appropriate apologies to the Fab Four. :)

I have a few seeds ready for source that has yet to hit portage. I love it when that happens. I've just uploaded .configs for 3.0.31 and 3.3.5 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Cheers,
Pappy

Moriah,

I take the news blackout as a good thing as far as the Nemesis Machine is concerned. Is this correct? If so, Booyah! If not, bummer.

Cheers,
Pappy

Well, I am nowon client site in Cleveland OH, but the NM has not messed up yet. I'm having breakfast at a local diner before I go to work. The NM has been up at least a week running fine. It is under some load, sniffing packets in promisc mode on 3 nics. I think the biggest problem was the bios being out of date, and the apci troubles. Apci is disabled, and the bios is now updated. Thanks to you and Neddy for all the help! :D

That is totally cool. I knew that we'd eventually find out what was giving it fits. While it means one less mobo to put under the post mortem knife, I'd rather you get your money's worth out of it. I have a way of attracting hardware, so I'm sure I'll be in possession of another.

Cheers,
Pappy

Speaking of attracting hardware, once I get the NM, and another server, fully configured, there are 2 older versions of those machines that have your name on them. One is not very exciting, an AMD Duron at 1.5 GHz with 1 or 1.5 GB ram, and the other is an AMD Athlon at 2.xx GHz (don't remember exactly) with a GB or so of ram, maybe even 2 GB. I also have 8 GB of the old ram from the NM, which failed memtest86 after 3 or 4 days of continuous running. It is 4x2GB of DDR2, so obviously only 1 stick is bad. You will get all 4; its your job to find the bad stick. 8O

I also have an 800 MHz or so old Dell or Gateway machine that you can have if you wnat it, otherwise it will go into the warehouse until the next big garage sale. It would make a good firewall, router, or tunnel endpoint, or maybe a print spooler for CUPS, but not if you have to rasterize for an ink jet printer.

I will include several mobile carriers, which allow cold swapping IDE drives without opening up the box. I used them before I had sata drives that I could hot swap.

I'll see what else I can find lying around that you might be able to use. I hope to ship this stuff around June sometime, but it depends on how much time I can put into the new web/email server running on an AMD F+ 8-core with 16 GB ram. I am having fits configuring courier-imap on it, as I have never used that version of imap before.

Moriah,

You're talking in a language I love, more computers!

Everyone,

It's been a fun day, and what better way to end it than to offer some more seeds from the hardened-sources folks. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r103, 3.2.16-hardened-r2, and 3.3.5-hardened in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Just want to let you know that the seed configs for kernel-3.3.4 are in the wrong directories. Currently the x86 config is in the 64_bit directory and the x86_64 config is in the 32_bit directory

http://kernel-seeds.org/seeds/64_bit/gentoo/3.3.4-gentoo-x86-08.config

http://kernel-seeds.org/seeds/32_bit/gentoo/3.3.4-gentoo-x86_64-08.config

And I want to say thanks for your awesome work. I use your seeds everytime I build a new kernel and they've always worked flawlessly for me. Granted I tweak them for my setup prior to compiling to suit my needs (beyond just hardware), but there's no telling how much time you've saved me! :D

Everyone,

I've just uploaded .configs for 3.3.5-gentoo in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

adversity,

Thanks for the heads up. I fixed it while I was updating.

Cheers.
