|
|
Can anyone, please explain what difference there is in using WebKit in stead of KHTML, as default web browser engine in Konqueror ?
( Konqueror → Settings → Configure Konqueror → General → Default browser engine )
For me, adobe-flash seems to work only with WebKit.
But are there other differences of functionality between the two?
Is there any functionality or features I miss if I use WebKit in stead of KHTML? _________________ /Phil |

Probably you already know that WebKit is a KHTML fork.
For me WebKit is faster than KHTML, and it doesn't crash on some web sites like phoronix.
But I still use KHTML, it supports HTML5 audio and video elements through phonon. |

sebaro, thanks for interesting views on KHTML. Yes I know that WebKit is a fork of KHTML. For the time being I will stay with WebKit as default browser engine. There are so many web pages that uses flash. However it would be neat to be able to use KHTML permanently.
Can one assume that adobe flash will gradually become obsolete once HTML5 catches on? _________________ /Phil |

I don't use flash so I can't help you with the KHTML/flash problem.
There's an old howto for konqueror/flash, but I don't know if it still works:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~lack/konqueror-flash.xml
You can also try open-source swfdec + swfdec-mozilla or gnash. |

I find that if I use webkit the nytimes website causes
frequent konqueror crashes ... I have no idea why _________________ .... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth

I tried nytimes.com/ with WebKit and I can confirm that it does not work with certain headline links for me either. With KHTML these links work and they lead to a log in page for subscribers. _________________ /Phil |

on the other hand, the webkit part breaks the nytimes limit
on article viewing (just open the articles in a new tab - unlimited
viewing .... until it crashes ) _________________ .... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth
