So, let's say I do an emerge --update, but leave off the --deep. Even though emerge does not have to check the full dependency tree for possible updates, it may still need to do so, correct? As in this scenario:
update A
A requires newer version of B
B requires newer version of C
C requires newer version of D
..etc., all the way down the full dependency tree.
In other words, emerge --update (without --deep) by itself should never leave you broken, correct? So if, let's say, you only cared about keeping your world packages up-to-date, you would never /need/ to do a deep update, correct? |

Yes that is correct.
OTOH, running --updata --deep help to to continuously move dependencies to newer version, and make it less likely that you need to do an unexpected large upgrade. Using only --upgrade may create IMO a time bomb of a large upgrade.
