The OggVorbis file spec hasn't changed since rc1 (or even before then), so XMMS will play any valid OggVorbis file you throw at it, regardless of what encoder you used.

That is, assuming you have the XMMS Ogg plugin (XMMS ships with it nowadays, so it's pretty hard to miss unless you explicitly turn it off :P ), and Xiphophorus (hooray I can spell that) made good on their promise to not break the basic file format.

Yeah the word is it's all supposed to be backward compatible anyway. Problem is you know I'm going to have to re-rip the 15% of my collection that I just re-ripped as oggs last month, because I'm an obsessive-compulsive l0s3r.

People on the slashdot threads post some good raves about how 1.0 is much better than the 1.0 RCs.

I've not yet tried out 1.0 (waiting for it to sneak into the Portage tree, because I'm lazy :P ), but I got some very impressive results using OggVorbis 1.0 RC1 on the Top Gun Special Edition soundtrack at an average bitrate of 64 Kbps. :) Looking forward to playing around with this release.

Yeah I'm waiting for portage to have it too. Not so much out of laziness as I hate having stuff outside of portage.

I've already confirmed how much better ogg is than mp3. I don't do WMA tests because I just don't use WMA.

Anyway I still have to wait for my client progs to bring the new ogg into their progs. Namely cdex for ripping on windows. I'm assuming that it comes with it's own ogg lib packaged up. If it read from the lib I had on my machine that would rock. Suppose I should look into it instead of just blabbing on cluelessly here.
