I upgrade my box very regularly.
My wife's lappy never.
I put kde-3.5 on it just before it was overtaken by kde-4 about 2years ago.
I can't possibly upgrade the lappy after all this time.
What I do regularly with the lappy is making backups.
She can do everything she wants to do with it.
So other then wanting the latest and greatest there is no reason to upgrade once you have a system that can do what
you need.
In case her lappy dies I can use the backup of her /home folder to put it on another one.

Only if using internet is not part of what she wants to do with it.

 ...or not wanting being part of a botnet or child pornography ring or whatever illegal activities the real owner of your laptop wants to do after you gave him easy access through probably gapping unfixed security holes with several years old kernel, glibc etc.  |

So what? Do you really believe that running a linux system with possibilities for security exploits which are known since years makes you safe?
There is essentially only a few things which can (and usually do) make linux safer than windows: - The defaults are much more sane (and it is not easy to use windows with sane defaults without losing crucial functionality; e.g. many windows programs make it unnecessarily hard to run them when you are not administrator/root)
- For criminals which want to send spam, the cost/gain-balance is better for windows since it is more widespread, especially under users who do not know how to run a secure system. So linux systems are usually not high on their list.
Running a system with known exploits means losing the first advantage in a catastrophic way. As for the second advantage: It can mean that your system is used by much worse criminals than by "harmless" ones who just use systems to send spam. |
