I have a machine that I have not updated in several months.

"Well, you asked for it" I'm sure you'll say, and... well, yeah. But I thought I was going to switch this machine to another OS, but I changed my mind. It'll be keeping Gentoo.

Before saying "Eff this!" and start rebuilding from scratch, I want to try to figure this out.

I think something got updated early on during a world update and broke everything else further down the chain, because I get this for everything:

Code:

checking whether the C compiler works... no
configure: error: in `/var/tmp/portage/media-libs/jpeg-8b/work/jpeg-8b':
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

Replace the package name with everything on my system.

I am switching this from ~x86 to stable, but I don't think that's the issue.

I can't even update gcc or coreutils.

emerge --info:

might want to run gcc-config to re set your C compiler, generally when you get this error is either due to broken CFLAGS or flat out not having the compiler in the expected path.

might need ldconfig also

and as always env-update && source /etc/profile in the shell you are using

I only have one option in gcc-config.

I just tried to set it anyway, and got this:

Code:

Diablo src # gcc-config -l
 [1] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.4.4 *
Diablo src # gcc-config set 1
 * gcc-config: Could not locate 'set' in '/etc/env.d/gcc/' !

8O

Yeah, OK, I'm just going to do this over.

Yep, still errors.

Code:

total 12

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  32 Jun  1 19:46 config-i686-pc-linux-gnu

Have you read GF20: C compiler cannot create executables?

During the update did you remove a 4.5 version of GCC?

Are there any useful error messages in config.log from a failed package?

I'm sorry to say I simply rebuilt Gentoo.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who watches his box blow up because it wasn't updated for too long. :P

Probably some lib got updated before gcc and *BOOM*. Which is why I do world updates no later than a month apart (except in this case - but I thought I was re-assigning this machine to another OS).
