hi there.
I'm writing an ISO I've written several times before, on this particular DVD-RW disc. Now, cdrecord claims that the ISO is too big, and that it does not fit on the DVD. On Windows, it works, no problem.
I've done the long blank process in xcdroast, tried the command line with cdrecord, and still the same.
So, what happened here?

Uh, I'm not going to change the ISO file. It's a Win7 volume copy ISO. (Yes, I have the volume license key).

I need to write it to a DVDRW (as I've done previously) to install on some new machines. This recorder, on this laptop, with this ISO, with this exact DVD-RW worked plenty of times before.

Curiously. On the virtual machine on this laptop, with windows 7, it recorded this iso. on this DVD-RW.

Only cdrecord is being a PITA.

ok, so I managed to write the image to this DVD with cdrecord on another of my machines, with gentoo also..

this is the output

Code:

gentoo rhiakath # cdrecord /mnt/usb/Software/ISOs/Windows\ 7/7600.16385.090713-1255_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULFRER_EN_DVD.iso
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Assuming -sao mode.
cdrecord: If your drive does not accept -sao, try -tao.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.
Cdrecord-ProDVD-ProBD-Clone 3.00 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2010 Jörg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.34
Using libscg version 'schily-0.9'.
No target specified, trying to find one...
Using dev=1,0,0.
Device type    : Removable CD-ROM
Version        : 5
Response Format: 2
Capabilities   :
Vendor_info    : 'PLDS    '
Identifikation : 'DVD+-RW DH-16ABS'
Revision       : 'PD11'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM.
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc-3 DVD+RW driver (mmc_dvdplusrw).
Driver flags   : NO-CD DVD MMC-3 SWABAUDIO BURNFREE FORCESPEED
Supported modes: PACKET SAO
cdrecord: Warning: Cannot read drive buffer.
cdrecord: Warning: The DMA speed test has been skipped.
Starting to write CD/DVD/BD at speed 4 in real SAO mode for single session.
Last chance to quit, starting real write    0 seconds. Operation starts.
Track 02: Total bytes read/written: 2501894144/2501894144 (1221628 sectors).

So, everything went smoothly...
So, on my laptop, I try the exact image, from the same disk, to the same DVDRW.

This is the result:
Code:

aiur rhiakath # cdrecord /mnt/usbstick/Software/ISOs/Windows\ 7/7600.16385.090713-1255_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULFRER_EN_DVD.iso
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Assuming -sao mode.
cdrecord: If your drive does not accept -sao, try -tao.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.

cdrecord: Warning: Cannot read drive buffer.
cdrecord: Warning: The DMA speed test has been skipped.
cdrecord: Data does not fit on current disk.

So , please, anyone has any idea why this happens?

searching the forums a bit yields: emerge dvdrtools and/or make sure the kernel has support as per http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/

good luck

On the pc I'm writing this I don't have dvd+rw-tools installed, only cdrtools. I don't have packet writing enabled on the kernel.
And I can write this iso to this dvd.

On the laptop, I don't have dvd+rw-tools installed either. I tried enabling packet writing.
Same result. Data does not fit on the cd.

Stupidly, when I mentioned that on windows it works, I meant on the Windows VirtualMachine inside this gentoo installation. So It's not the drive....

How can I check what is the reported free space on a DVD-RW? Maybe the part that reports the free space is bluffing out somewhere?

Any other ideas?
