Hello everyone ,

I just finished configuring grub for the gentoo installation , and when I try to boot it outputs the following:

Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(8,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
0800    488386584  sda  driver: sd
0b00       1048575  sr0   driver: sr

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)
Pid:  1, comm: swapper not tainted 2.6.36-gentoo-r8 #1

I have read couple of solutions about this problem , though did not seem to work for me.
Here is a bit of info:

dany74q,

Welcome to Gentoo.

Code:
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
0800    488386584  sda  driver: sd
0b00       1048575  sr0   driver: sr
tells that the kernel can see your sda but not the partitions on it. All your drives and partitions visible to the kernel will be listed here.

Looking in your kernel .config shows
Code:
# CONFIG_MSDOS_PARTITION is not set
In fact, you don't have any partition types set at all, so while the kernel can see your disk, it does not understand any partitioning schemes.

Using make menuconfig, turn on CONFIG_MSDOS_PARTITION and rebuild and reinstall your kernel.
