[SOLVED]Gnome 3 Applications menu crash

As of sometime yesterday, Gnome-Shell began to crash whenever I tried to enter the applications menu or search for an application. This has limited me to my side bar and Alt-F2 for running programs. Intercepting Gnome-Shell's stderr, I got this snippet during a crash:

I am using Xorg-server 1.10 and the open source ATI drivers. Does anyone know what this could be?

With some experimentation, it seems to be a video driver issue. I switched back to the proprietary drivers, and the application menu worked, though the bugs that came with the proprietary drivers also returned. Attempting to go back to the open source drivers, I seem to have more issues now. While glxinfo reports that direct rendering is enabled, programs that require 3D, such as Gnome and Minecraft, do not run. Given that everything is fine in Windows, I don't think this is a hardware issue.

it might be a missing ogl extension that gnome requires and the FOSS drivers do not yet support

The open source drivers were working well for a good half a day yesterday, and right now they aren't even working well enough to play Minecraft in Fluxbox. Something broke, and I can't figure out how to fix it.

EDIT: Found the issue. It was how the open source driver was set up. Changed some kernel settings related to graphics and now everything works perfectly.

Well, first of all you need to use the open source drivers. The proprietary drivers have issues that require fixing by the devs of either the drivers or Gnome 3.

To get the drivers set up, you want to use Kernel Mode Setting (KMS)
The Xorg configuration guide, x, details how to set the kernel up properly for KMS.

From there, getting the drivers set up properly is a matter of following the ati and hardware acceleration guides.

Note: The hardware acceleration guide also has some kernel changes, so I'd recommend looking though them and getting all the kernel tweaks done in one go.

Finally, you'll want to add "export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none" to /etc/environment
Without that variable being set, Gnome-shell will run unusably slow.

Getting KMS set up was the big missing piece for me. I had always had the Vesa framebuffer in the kernel, which prevented KMS. This wasn't a problem before as I had been using the proprietary ATI drivers. A side effect of getting KMS working was that the kernel automatically set the boot screen to the screen's native resolution with tux in the upper corner. I like

Thanks, I've set up the drivers with KMS, I've still got acceleration but I still am experienced crashes. I went to compatibility mode (gnome-2) and the experience is better.
It may be that the crashes are now unrelated to the xorg driver. Thanks anyway
