Hi @ all!

I"m glad that my gentoo installation worked perfectly. Even with KDE 4 there have been no dependency problems whatsoever.
I was waiting quite some time for KDE 4 getting stable and I am really looking forward using it..

Now there is only one tiny little problem:
Having installed kdebase-meta (including kdm) and hal, xdm and dbus I have had no problems in portage. However,
Code:
startkde
does not work. It gives me the following:

Code:
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server

But WHERE is my xdm config file?

Code:
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/conf.d# ls
alsasound      dmcrypt        local.start   pciparm     splash
bluetooth      env_whitelist  local.stop    pydoc-2.6   sshd
bootmisc       git-daemon     lvm           pydoc-3.1   syslog-ng
clock          hald           mysql         rc          udev
consolefont    hdparm         mysqlmanager  rc.offline  urandom
crypto-loop    hostname       net           rc.wlan     wireless.example
device-mapper  keymaps        net.example   rsyncd
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/conf.d#

Code:
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc# ls | grep xdm

Code:
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/X11# ls
chooser.sh  Sessions  startDM.sh  xdm  xinit
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/X11# cd xdm/
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/X11/xdm# ls
Xaccess  xdm-config  Xresources  Xservers

I can't find it and have no clue, how to go on...

Can anybody please help me?

Greetings,
eis

then I tried to install xdm then in order to launch KDE.
But look:

Code:
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/init.d# ls
alsasound    device-mapper  local           netmount      sshd
bluetooth    dhcpcd         localmount      nscd          syslog-ng
bootmisc     dmcrypt        lvm             numlock       udev
checkfs      dmeventd       lvm-monitoring  pciparm       udev-dev-tarball
checkroot    functions.sh   mdev            pydoc-2.6     udev-mount
clock        git-daemon     modules         pydoc-3.1     udev-postmount
consolefont  hald           mysql           reboot.sh     urandom
consolekit   halt.sh        mysqlmanager    rmnologin     vixie-cron
crypto-loop  hdparm         net.eth0        rsyncd
dbus         hostname       net.eth1        runscript.sh
depscan.sh   keymaps        net.lo          shutdown.sh
root@illusion:/mnt/gentoo/etc/init.d#

also not there.

is there sth wrong with m useflags?

Code:
USE="X -doc kde -qt3 qt4 -gnome -gtk -gtk2 -arts ftp -mysql -cups
cdr dvd dvdread -dvdr -lirc logitech-mouse acpi alsa
sse sse2 ssse3 ipv6
unicode nls bash-completion
static-libs
hal laptop dell
mozilla firefox browserplugin nsplugin java xulrunner -seamonkey
-gaim icq imap
#idn java
xine -nautilus -emacs
#-v4l -v4l2 -dvb -portaudio -pulseaudio divx4linux theora a52 aac mp2 mp3 mpeg $
dri opengl -3dfx -voodoo3 xcomposite"

PS:
the static-libs thing.. portage advised me to use it during KDE installation.. I don't know what it does. Is it adviseable?

Thanks in advance!!

Did you install x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.4

I get this from this command.
Code:
#  equery b xdm
[ Searching for file(s) xdm in *... ]
x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.4 (/etc/init.d/xdm)
x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.4 (/etc/conf.d/xdm)

hmmm..

Nope, didn t do that.
And there is not a word of that in the GENTOO KDE Install Howto.
But it sounds reasonable.
let s try it out!

greetz,
eis

PS:
isn't it true that KDE works only with kdm and doesn t need xdm to be installed actually?
