portage is untarring VERY slowly

Does anyone else notice that while untarring portage using Sysrescuecd, it stalls at times and takes a long time to resume untarring?

Not really to be honest.

I assume that you mean you are using a SysrescueCD to bootstrap a new system? If so why not use a Gentoo minimal or Live CD instead.

Your question may be better posted on forums relating to Sysrescue referring to untar/gzip performance.

If you can demonstrate comparable performance problems (how bad are they?) then please post back here.
