I know using gnome-screensaver is not how the XFCE Gentoo HowTo recommends you do things, but xscreensaver sucks (it would contantly freeze or randomly die. As a result I have configured xfce-utils with -lock as a use flag). I have gnome-screensaver set up to declare the system as idle after 10 minutes and then lock the screen. I also have XFCE configured to detect and start gnome services. The screen saver daemon does in fact start correctly.

I have a keymap for WindowsKey-l to lock the screen.

My keymap works great. It engages gnome-screensaver and locks the screen.

However, the screen when left idle does not engage the screensaver. I thought it was a problem with DPMS, so I installed gnome-power-manager to change the time my monitor times out (the xfce version requires hal, and I refuse to build hal, and I figured gnome-power-manager would play nice with gnome-screensaver). What really surprised me was the gnome-power-manager shows up nicely in my XFCE menus when gnome-screensaver does not.

It appears to me that gnome-screensaver cannot figure out when my xfce desktop is idle.

How do I rectify this situation?

Well... fail. XFCE blames Gnome, and Gnome says too bad.

My question now becomes: What can I use besides xscreensaver since gnome-screensaver apparently is not an option?

Not sure if it is still revelant to XFCE, but it is to my Fvwm-based session.

I ended up writing a Python script which fakes the Gnome SessionManager, and does the XIDLE detection for Gnome ScreenSaver. It's available from [0], and the code is documented at [1].
