And I already tried to re-emerge every package which has font in its name (beside some others):

Hi Uwe.

You appear to run Xorg server 1.9 (FTR with multipointer support). You probably still have an xorg.conf file lurking in /etc/X11 with old font paths. You may safely move it to a safe location and add your input devices to separate configuration files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ . I also assume you've run revdep-rebuild and rebuilt all your Xorg input drivers ?

Just in case: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.8-upgrade-guide.xml .

I followed the guide and moved my the input stuff to /etx/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Additionally I removed *every* occurrence of FontPath in xorg.conf. But unfortunately the errors persists:

Xorg input drivers have been rebuilt and revdep-rebuild didn't catch any X/font related stuff.

Didn't had much time to troubleshoot this further the last few days, buttoday I had a few minutes left and masked xorg-server-1.9.2. Portage merged 1.7.7-r1 again and after rebuilding my x11-drivers everything kdm came up again (with my old xorg.conf) and I was able to login. xorg-server-1.7.7-r1 produces the following log:

Note I now remember I also re-merged all of my fonts after migrating Xorg server to version 1.9. You were probably very close. Just in case you would want to give it a try again some day.

Id tried the "let me be absolutely sure" way and re-emerged my whole system:

Code:

1294781214:  *** emerge --oneshot --ask --verbose --emptytree world
1294781402:  >>> emerge (1 of 1133) sys-libs/zlib-1.2.3-r1 to /

The Xorg.0.log basically didn't change

So basically I'm screwed since I don't have any idea what to do next except writing a mail to the X.org developers mailing list and ask for help or install another distribution :(.

Well, it occurs that is not a bug but a configuration problem. What puzzles me most is this:
Code:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/misc/, removing from list!
...

This is what I have on my system:
ll /usr/share/fonts/:
total 272
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 94208 Dec 30 19:10 100dpi
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 94208 Dec 30 19:10 75dpi
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:14 OTF
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:10 Speedo
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:09 TTF
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:17 Type1
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:05 corefonts
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:16 cyrillic
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 24 19:04 default
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:04 dejavu
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:03 encodings
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:17 freefonts
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 20480 Dec 30 19:16 misc
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 12288 Dec 30 19:04 terminus
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:17 ttf-bitstream-vera
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:17 unifont
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:17 urw-fonts
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root  4096 Dec 30 19:01 util

So let's check what I'm suspecting. There's probably a font alias named 'fixed' that you need to remove.
egrep '^fixed' $(locate fonts.alias):
/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic/fonts.alias:fixed  -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-koi8-r
/usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.alias:fixed        -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1

I don't know what should be changed on your system but this is what's on mine.

EDIT: I also spotted this on Xorg Wiki.

I have the same problem.
I completed a emerge --deep --update --newuse world and now X won't start

When I look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log I see
Code:

[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/misc, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/local/share/fonts, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/misc, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/OTF, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/100dpi, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/75dpi, removed from list!
[dix] Could not init font path element built-ins, removed from list!

Fatal server error:

Could not open default font 'fixed'

When I run

egrep '^fixed' $(locate fonts.alias):

I get
Code:

/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic/fonts.alias:fixed -misc-fixed.....
egrep: /usr/share/fonts/misc/fonts.alias:: No such file or directory

If the colon in the end is removed then the egrep is successful for both

egrep '^fixed' $(locate fonts.alias)

EDIT:

Okay, I think I shouldn't have taken the colon at the end of the egrep example literally. I suspect VinzC used the colon just as a separator.

If I remove the colon then I get the same results as VinzC.

Does anyone else has this issue about font path element not found?

Thanks.

I found the solution to this issue in the following thread
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3472524-highlight-fonts+dir.html

After reading the thread I did this:

Code:

mv /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.5 to_some_safe_dir
emerge libXfont bdftopcf
emerge font-misc-misc font-cursor-misc font-alias
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

and everything worked

I spent 10 hours of troubleshooting and searching to resolve this issue. Hopefully, it will help someone.

Not exactly; this is how PHPbb works on Gentoo Forums with the [code="type some code here"] tag... :D It adds the colon as a punctuation sign and wraps the results with a frame.

This also did the trick for me - just three days before I need it my laptop is usable again. Thanks :)

One million thank you-s guys. This is day 3 for me and I was about to start my 2nd "emerge -e world". :)

I can't imagine how the original, original poster figured it out. Talk about no clues!

On the plus side, I remember when my emerge -e took at least 3 days to finish, now it's less that 24 hours. And no errors!
