That's just a wallpaper or is it an actual chess game?

Just a wallpaper. It comes with kde. My background is usually just solid black since I rarely see it.

Too bad, an actual 3D chess game with touch interface could interest me in all that new and overhyped tech.

Someone knows, if some kind of chess computer exists, which is just a client? I mean, I can connect it to my pc and use the engines I prefer and the board just displays the moves or moves the figures?

The only halfway decent real 3d (like OGL) chess game I know of is games-board/dreamchess which unfortunately isn't a client and just has a medeokre engine built in. My favorite client is games-board/knights (Qt4 interface). Supports Gnuchess, Crafty, and some online chess servers. All the other clients look like crap and are unmaintained (though some have a lot more features).

Guess we've got a little misunderstandig here. I meant an actual (real life) chess board/chess computer, which I can use together with my pc. For example, there are some boards out there, which can move the pieces on there own - IIRC by some magnetic lanes under the surface.

Most of them have a rather bad engine, so it would be sweet, if I could hook up the board to a pc and use the engine I prefer. Or upload games and see the pieces moving. Even cooler, support some kind of online play, so anyone around the world could move the pieces on my desk.

IMHO, that shouldn't be too hard to built, but I couldn't find anything like that, yet. Basically, the move data needs to be relayed via USB/something to the device and there translated to the movement engine. If someone would build it, I'd pay for it :)

Mad kudos to you. I've always admired FVWM... from afar. I'm too lazy to spend time tweaking configs to get something that nice. :P

I don't think FVWM is harder to use/config than other WMs.
There are very nice themes/configs you can try here:

That actually looks pretty slick. Aside from the jpg compression artifacts.

Thanks. I really cannot take any of the credit thought. Pretty much stole it from some guy's screenshot at deviantart. The compression comes from using gnomes image viewer to compress it from png->jpg. I should have fired up Gimp instead, it really looks a bit over-compressed there.

For screenshots you should really use png instead. As most screenshots have big regions of pixels with exactly the same color, it compresses very well and is precisely what png was designed for.

Jpg on the other hand is far better with photographs and such, as usually same-colored regions are very small rare so png ends up taking loads of space.
