after last update suddenly i find there is no sound in mplayer and vlc.
alsaplayer works fine.
what configuration if any i should adjust?
alsaconf correctly runs finding sound chip and configures.
i dont know what further can be done.:(

Post the output of "emerge -pv mplayer vlc"

Does mplayer work if you do "mplayer -ao alsa"?

mplayer -ao alsa plays mp3 files ok.
with video no sound ,video seems to run slowly.
vlc video plays correctly but no sound. -ao alsa did not work for vlc.
emerge -pv mplayer vlc output :

Code:
localhost Downloads # emerge -pv mplayer vlc

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Well, vlc was built without alsa support. That is probably the vlc problem there.

Now, mplayer can use alsa, but is choosing not to. Why....

Can you post the output of:
"emerge --info"
"USE="alsa" emerge -uDNpv mplayer"

Please capture the output of mplayer (without the -ao alsa flag) when it fails to play with audio and post that, too.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Multimedia. Not a Portage issue so it fits better here.

mplayer was updated in the last emerge -Du world 2 days back.
both vlc and mplayer were nicely working prior to this update.
how now vlc is without alsa? then there was sound in it previously.
it is all confusing now :?

Code:
localhost ramaswamy # USE="alsa" emerge -uDNpv mplayer

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] dev-libs/libpthread-stubs-0.1  USE="-static-libs% (-debug%)" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] sys-apps/util-linux-2.18-r1  USE="cramfs%* crypt nls perl unicode -loop-aes -old-linux (-selinux) -slang (-uclibc)" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] media-libs/libsndfile-1.0.23  USE="alsa* -minimal -sqlite" 0 kB

Total: 3 packages (3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB

now it asks for 3 more files reinstall
