whenever i try to run firefox i end up getting an error along the lines of "-bash: fork: resource not found". the problem is remedied by restarting fluxbox, and a reinstall of firefox didn't work, thus exhausting my extremely limited knowledge of computers

what's happening here and what can i do about it?

edit: so far as i can tell i can run something like links, so i'm guessing this has something to do with x?

Please post the output of emerge --info and the full command line you use to start Firefox, along with the exact output produced.

i ran into other problems trying to move the file with emerge --info in it around. it seems i did something really stupid to my computer, but i cannot remember what :?

to my knowledge i haven't really played with any of the flags aside from what the handbook told me. computer is a thinkpad x100e

i'm trying
Code:
firefox &
from nonroot
the specific error i'm getting is
Quote:
GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server: Some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.pojects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details 1 - Could not send message to GConf daemon: Failed to fork (Resource temporarily unavailable))

edit: after that the error it returns is
Code:
-bash: fork: retry:  Resource temporarily unavailable

emerge --info output is

Code:

edit: i tried emerging firefox with USE="-gconf", which i'm not sure actually did anything, and i can run firefox as root, but i don't really want to do that...

i still got the same error for nonroot user though
