CPU cooler for Gateway 600YG2

Is there a program like CPU idle that I can use to lower the temperature of my CPU temperature?

I am emerging openoffice, mozilla and xfce4. Then my laptop suddenly stop and turned off because of high temperature resulted from heavy CPU usage.

I was planning to recompile everything because I want to try new flags in my make.conf but I am worried that it will suffer the same consequence.

What about lm_sensor?

Additionaly, can i bootstrap even after I finish installing my box?
