I followed the guide to install mysql here but after a successful emerge of mysql i tried running | Code: | | emerge --config =dev-db/mysql-5.1.51 |
The response was How can I finish setting up mysql? I've looked around on the forums, but I haven't seen anyone run into this. Any help anyone can offer is appreciated.

this old thread helped me on a recent (v13) installation of gentoo.
It seems I had /etc/init.d/mysql, mysql (mysqlclient) and mysqld.
The service didn't start and I had no /var/lib/mysql. I was getting an error related to replicate settings not set while trying to start the service, that I should specify commands for logging. The message started with "No argument was provided to --log-bin, and...".
I found in mysql guide that I should (roughly) do emerge --config mysql but got 'no packages found' no matter how specific I was on the ebuild.
So then when I visited this topic, tried the suggestions here and I had no virtual/mysql nor dev-db/mysql installed from emerge -s mysql ALTHOUGH I had [ R ] dev-db/mysql-5.6-r6 while trying to simply emerge mysql.
Then I emerged virtual/mysql (which was treated as new), and ignored emerge's claim of "rebuild" for dev-db/mysql and re-emerged it.
Voila, emerge --config worked and rest of history is clearly everything will work.  |
