Nvidia problems

I've recently installed gentoo onto my Athlon Xp 2200 laptop, downloaded the nvidia drivers for my Geforce MX 440 Go, it created the kernel modules as apparently mine didn't have them installed and then when i use it to run X, X runs fine but as soon as i exit back to the shell i get a screen covered in reddy colours and all sorts (evidently not a console).
