|
|
Does someone have mail-client/thunderbird-3.1.6 with "New message" alert working??
Mine doesn't play sounds nor does it show a popup notification
Is there some unknown dependency for showing/playing notification?

Which window manager are you using? I have a popup in mine, but I didn't configure anything to get it. The popup is not the standard kde notification method though, even though I am using kde. |

@paulj
My wm is fluxbox. Do you think such feature inside thunderbird depends on capability of the wm I selected? As you are using KDE, I assume KDE provides some library which would be needed by thunderbird but isn't pulled in.
Edit
When I press the Play button in thunderbird preferences, I am receiving this error in nsconsole: (See my screenshot) Code: | Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure
code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsISound.play]" nsresult:
"0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame ::
chrome://messenger/content/preferences/general.js :: anonymous :: line
94" data: no]
| According to bug 536996 this is caused by absence of media-sound/esound. Should I file a bug for thunderbird to depend on esound?
After emerge of media-sound/esound the Play button in preferences works. But still thunderbird does not trigger any alert when mail arrives |

Here is the General settings for my installation of thunderbird: Screenshot
I haven't installed any add-ins to manage alerts, and the options selected in "Customise" are the same as yours.
I have had a look through the other settings etc, and can't see anything else which might cause this feature not to work.
I haven't got fluxbox installed, but I do have openbox - I'll try in there to see if there is a difference.
Have you tried running thunderbird from a terminal to see what messages are posted while the program is running?
Is your system currently in a consistent state? Have you run revdep-rebuild recently? In my experience these sorts of issues are often due to a missing library dependency. Have you had a look around the web? Is this issue reported elsewhere?
Sorry I can't be more helpful! |

Starting thunderbird with Error Console does not show any errors after having emerged media-sound/esound. And it still does not run any alert when mail comes in. Also tried with a fresh and clean profile (thunderbird -ProfileManager), but no improvement.

Would I have to enable some of the disabled use flags like dbus or gnome? Presently the use flags are like Code: | $ emerge -pvt thunderbird
These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

The notifications are working here with the "alsa crypt dbus gnome lightning" USE flags set. Perhaps try recompiling with "gnome"? |

Here is mine:
Code: | # emerge -pvt thunderbird
These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

[ebuild R ] mail-client/thunderbird-3.1.7 USE="alsa crypt dbus gnome ldap libnotify lightning startup-notification -bindist -custom-optimization -mozdom -system-sqlite -wifi" LINGUAS="en en_GB -af -ar -be -bg -bn -bn_BD -ca -cs -da -de -el -en_US -es -es_AR -es_ES -et -eu -fi -fr -fy -fy_NL -ga -ga_IE -he -hu -id -is -it -ja -ko -lt -nb -nb_NO -nl -nn -nn_NO -pa -pa_IN -pl -pt -pt_BR -pt_PT -ro -ru -si -sk -sl -sq -sv -sv_SE -tr -uk -zh -zh_CN -zh_TW" 0 kB

You could try gnome - the others shouldn't make any difference! |

Works here with -gnome: Code: | [ebuild R ] mail-client/thunderbird-3.1.7 USE="alsa bindist crypt dbus system-sqlite -custom-optimization -gnome -ldap -libnotify -lightning -mozdom -startup-notification -wifi" LINGUAS="-af -ar -be -bg -bn -bn_BD -ca -cs -da -de -el -en -en_GB -en_US -es -es_AR -es_ES -et -eu -fi -fr -fy -fy_NL -ga -ga_IE -he -hu -id -is -it -ja -ko -lt -nb -nb_NO -nl -nn -nn_NO -pa -pa_IN -pl -pt -pt_BR -pt_PT -ro -ru -si -sk -sl -sq -sv -sv_SE -tr -uk -zh -zh_CN -zh_TW" 0 kB |
I have the sound disabled, but popups do appear (although often with the wrong message displayed - but that's presumably a separate issue). For the record, I'm running FVWM. |

Now, after several compilations with different use flag combinations I found my USE flags being ok. It's working also with "USE=-dbus". But does never alert for my regular profile where I use movemail box (and fetchmail) instead of ordinary mail box.
Looks like I have to cleanup my thunderbird's profile |

|
|
Guys,
I have recently installed Thunderbird as an email client, but I cannot get any sound for incoming messages. Neither of the two options "Default system sound for new mail" or "Use the following sound file" produces any sound. Using the play button also does nothing. Other applications (vlc, Mplayer, flash videos) play sound just fine. I have tested this under both XFce and Gnome.
Anyone has come across this issue? |

To me it looks like Thunderbird is missing a certain USE flag for message notification sound. |

Why is this labeled as "Solved"? I do not see any solution in there, nor do I think that the original poster has resolved his issue. Am I missing something?
BTW, my problem still remains, I cannot get any sound out of thunderbird, clicking on "Play" does nothing (when I choose to have my own wav file played) , no error message in the console. Sound in other applications works fine.
The use flags are:
Code: | [ebuild R ] mail-client/thunderbird-3.1.7 USE="alsa crypt dbus gnome libnotify lightning startup-notification -bindist -custom-optimization -ldap -mozdom -system-sqlite -wifi" |

This thread has been marked solved as I saw it is WFM after creating an ordinary mailbox instead of using the movemail inbox. Did you emerge media-sound/esound as mentioned in my posting above? Feel free creating a bug for the probably missing esound USE flag.
BTW
I am curious about why Thunderbird has the alsa USE flag instead of using media-sound/esound. |

charles17:
I see now. This is unfortunately of no help to me, I had esound installed to start with, but the sound has never worked for me.
Also, I am not sure if thunderbird should explicitly depend on esound, it may be that something else down the line was broken and needed esound. It is certainly not needed at compile time (otherwise you wouldn't have been able to emerge it). |

So I would expect an esound USE flag as runtime dependency for supporting the sound notification. |
