I've been using mplayer on my mythtv based HTPC for playing dvd iso's. Recently I've found that for some dvd iso's mplayer can't play them, but vlc can, so I've been working to switch my HTPC to vlc. However, it has been harder to get vlc working on my HTPC then it was on my laptop. On my laptop it works out of the box, but on the HTPC it has a lot of trouble.
The HTPC uses a SiS video card. I finally got xv working with vlc, but now dvd's won't play past the title. The title plays fine, but when I select anything from the menu vlc crashes. This is the last of the output:

It does I checked that already:

are you sure the dvd (the drive or the disk) are ok ? specially because mplayer was having trouble with it too

or try to bypass title running vlc dvd:///dev/dvd @0:1:0
(i'm not sure about the format, look for vlc command line, but this should jump to read the dvd at chapter 1) |

They are files. I got them via dvdbackup and mkisofs.
They play fine on my laptop with vlc. |

I'm rebuilding it now with -qt4 to see if that helps. I checked, and you seem to have the right syntax for playing a different chapter directly, but the @ command just didn't do anything, I tried different numbers after it, no luck. |

I had to disable the skins useflag to get rid of the qt4 useflag, taking with the UI, however, still crashes. No qt errors now. Here is the output:

Thanks for your help. It looks like there are some similar bugs on bugzilla, but to see if there were what I was experiencing, I would have to change my cflags and do emerge -e vlc . I'll wait to see if a future change to vlc of ffmpeg fixes this on its own. Most of my disks work with mplayer as I've said.

I am getting a similar error with a DVD that has worked fine in the past. (Currently using vlc 1.1.9, ffmpeg 0.6_p25767).
Menu starts up, plays well, selecting any menu item results in segfault. Dmesg is same as what Nicias sees.
This bugzilla errror seems to be the same, and is suggested to be due to a patch. I looked through the ffmpeg patch, but don't know enough to be able to figure it out.

I've looked into this further, and confirmed that removing the 330_all_ffmpeg.patch fixes the problem.
I played around a bit, and found that I could get dvds to play if I removed the following the following changes from the
vlc-1.1.9/modules/codec/avcodec/video.c

Not a waste of time on my end though, I learned a bit about ebuilds and ccache in the meantime (although I don't see what is exactly causing the segfault - oh well!) |

| It seems like upgrading to vlc-1.1.9-r1 fixed it for me too. I've just checked with one disk, but seems to be working. |
