Hello all,

I cannot make my video card working with a recompiled kernel (but the default kernel works)
on my Pentium4 based laptop.

I tried to follow the ATI driver howto but it doesnt work with my card. I have a permanent error message when runing 'lilo' :

'Warning: Unable to determine video adapter in use in the present system'

I tried to use grub and it can write into the MBR without an error. However, both grub and lilo results in the same boot message. 'Invalid boot sector'.

I have no other OS on the computer.

I tried to to find an answer before posting, but I couldnt find anything in google and in the gentoo forums.

Thanks!

Does it actually prevent LILO from booting?

The recompiled kernel is 2.4.22-grsec with ati-drivers emerged after kernel compilation, as suggested by the ati-driver-howto.

It does prevent lilo from booting yes.

One more detail, I have only one ext3 partition mounted on / , is it a problem ?

Only one ext3 partition on / shouldn't be a problem - this sounds like a more fundamental LILO problem with the way it's trying to talk to the video hardware. Perhaps you can check the LILO man pages and see if there's anything to do with configuring the video mode?

I tried both vga=normal and vga=791, and both give the exact same error at boot time (and the same warning message at 'lilo' time).

lilo -T video prints 'No video mode information is available'

lspci prints:

[...]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY
[...]

The problem is still present.

As far as I know the ati-drivers don't support the Mobility line of cards.
You must use the xfree-drm ebuild.

I tried Xfree DRI activated in the kernel, but lilo still does print the warning message and
I still have the 'incorrect boot loader' error at boot time (I dont think lilo is printing this
msg, but the bios probably cant give control to the lilo code).

I cant find in the default kernel /proc/config files the exact options to activate, now I really have no idea about how to make this stuff work ;< I'm even thinking about downgrading to slackware 8.1 and hope that the stuff will work (never tried with this new hardware)

BTW: I dont think my problem is really related to Xfree since for the moment, I did
all my work in console (unless you call 'xfree drm' the kernel option I was talking about at the beginning of this post)
