Hi,

Getting my hands on an old p5 505 Server.

Anyone have experience with this kind of hardware, are there any pitfalls, caveats and the like?

Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for your reply.

Did you install the OS yourself or used a preconfigured machine?

Yeah, however as usual with server class hardware the power consumption is through the roof, at least it sais so in the specs (500W at full load). NOT good when compiling a lot.

I got my machine with no OS installed thus I did a linux installation by myself on that unmanaged and headless POWER machine.
I don't have any HMC or other IBM goodies for my power hungry machine (9123-710) and i went by serial console. Only few days ago i acquired a GXT135P (but I still use it only over ssh). I read a lot of IBM Redbooks!

I suggest to you use the IBM Diagnostic CD (AIX based) and to go for a firmware (microcodes) update on IBM support website.
After that... let's go with linux!
