Hi, folks. This issue seems to be a faq, but doesn't seem to be known widely.

Contrary to its myth, the effect of tmpfs emerging is marginal:

(But I like tmpfs since I believe HDD use reduction makes it crash less frequently.)

And when the use of tmpfs exceeds the half of PHYSICAL ram, it freezes for a while:

It doesn't matter how much swap you have. So emerging in tmpfs *can be slower* if the package is big enough in your env.

# Hey, I'm not techie enough, so I can't expand on this any more. Don't expect my reply.

The average package will not be sped up by much. But emerging in tmpfs hurts only if you run out of memory. And certain emerges / operations like checking out from git can be sped up considerably. If you have encrypted root, then using tmpfs is also more convenient than creating an extra partition for an unencrypted filesystem.
