I'm taking this university course right? About Linux, I figure, free credits. Wrong! This isn't a course on linux -- its a course on obscure vi and emacs commands that no one would ever really use! Great. Well, whatever. I notice the author was using nvi. So I figure, like an ass, that I would install nvi too since its just in portage right there.
Well, I decide that I hate nvi. I remove it -- or do I? Because now my system won't upgrade! Something in db is blocking .. something about nvi -- which is not installed? This is the most unusual thing I've seen portage do.
nvi is permanetly listed as being required now! eh?
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] >=sys-libs/db-4 (from pkg app-editors/nvi-1.81.5)
[ebuild N ] app-editors/nvi-1.81.5
I tried removing db, but that didn't do anything. It just had to be reinstalled -- along with the hated nvi.
Any ideas how to cleanly defeat this? |

emerge -p unmerge db-4 nvi
That should work _________________ ---------------

Yes, but nvi is not installed! Its long gone... and I've tried removing db already.
The problem is, that portage seems to insist that nvi requires db to be installed to function, only that db blocks nvi... all without nvi actually being installed.
Its really wierd... |

I have this problem, too. Injecting nvi helps. But this is still highly annoying. |
